Position Description:
Reporting to the Facility Director, the Facility Manager will oversee the Science World facility’s daily operations, responsible for coordinating and managing maintenance and repair activities and overseeing contractors to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. This position is hands-on, and the Manager is expected to work alongside other Building Operators in the maintenance and rejuvenation of the building while acting in a managerial capacity for day-to-day operational matters within the department.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations and maintenance
- Maintenance programs - Manage and maintain the building's systems and components, including building operations equipment, schedule routine, preventative maintenance and emergency repairs. Ensure compliance with local codes and regulations
- Vendor and Contractor Management – Negotiate, supervise and manage relationships with external contractors and service providers
Team Leadership:
- Recruit, train and mentor – maintain a diverse team of facility and operations professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
- Performance management - Develop and manage the team’s performance by setting job expectations and performance standards, fostering open communications, providing regular feedback and providing training and development opportunities
Planning and Management
- Budgeting - Create, oversee, and manage the department’s budget for building operations, maintenance, cleaning and capital investment. This includes identifying cost saving opportunities and forecasting financial needs
- Daily operations - Oversee the daily operation of the Department, including scheduling and assignment of work, and ordering and inventory control of parts, replacement units and other building-related supplies
- Long-term asset management – Supporting the Facility Director in the development of plans for the replacement and upkeep of major facility systems and components over their lifecycle. Including maintaining the VFA Facility Capital Planning Software
- Sustainability – Identify and implement sustainability practices that will reduce the environmental impact of the facility and enhance its overall sustainability
- Health and Safety – Ensure the facility meets all health and safety standards, including conducting safety audits and training staff. Identify and assess risks to the facility, assets, and occupants to ensure the Manager, Safety and Security is aware and able to develop emergency responses plans to minimize liability
Other
- Perform both on-call and call out duties for emergencies related to the building
- Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in a related field
- A Fourth (4th) Class Power Engineer Inter-Provincial certification or higher, from a recognized educational institution in BC
- A minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience performing installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, or electronic equipment in an institutional/industrial setting, or similar experience
- Must have experience with state-of-the-art HVAC and building controls. Additional knowledge in Building Maintenance, Construction, Electrical, Plumbing, and light fabrication (preferred)
- Excellent abilities in managing team performance and fostering an effective team
- Understanding of general business practices, fiscal management and business reporting
- Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, including business writing
- Proven organizational skills and the ability to manage and execute projects from start to finish
- Must be able to lift to 25 kg
- A valid class 5 BC driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Experience working with Microsoft Office suite
Working Conditions:

Site inspections, walking, and exposure to construction areas or mechanical equipment rooms

Standard business hours with flexibility needed for emergencies, project deadlines, special events, or after-hours issues
The pay range for this position is $70,000 - $98,000 per annum
