Under the guidance of an Advanced Orthopaedic Technologist or Physician, Orthopaedic Technicians provide care to clients with orthopaedic problems through the application, adjustment and removal of casts They have a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another and are able to accurately describe Orthopaedic conditions. They are knowledgeable in basic plaster cast application.

Orthopaedic Technicians are individuals apprenticing to become Orthopaedic Technologists and may be in the process of meeting Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists requirements for registration.Orthopaedic Technicians have some medical training and work under the controlled medical act delegated by a Physician (Regulated Health Professions Act), and in collaboration with health care professionals.

Regular Part-time

Rate of Pay: $27.69 per hour - $29.28 per hour

Hours of Work: Up to 22.5 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Secondary School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent acceptable to the Hospital
  • Successful completion of a recognized Orthopaedic Technician training program
  • Registration in progress with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists
  • Recent related experience in a clinic setting
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge, ability and competence in the application, adjustment and removal of casts, traction, and braces
  • Demonstrated physical ability to mobilize patients in a safe and effective manner through the use of proper lifting and positioning techniques
  • Physical ability to manipulate and position fractured limbs or other body parts in awkward positions for long periods of time
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of theory and practice of aseptic techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of patient teaching and ability to teach effectively
  • Ability to work with both adult and paediatric populations in an effective manner
  • Demonstrated organization, time management, problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated skills to work independently and interdependently
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to ongoing change in the health care environment
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance record
  • Demonstrated ability to function productively in a fast paced environment
  • Able to accommodate changes in schedule
