What would my role be?

Reporting to the Manager, Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), you will function as an active member of the IPAC team to provide comprehensive infection prevention & control services by assisting with the development and implementation of all functions and activities of the corporate Infection Prevention & Control Program

How do I qualify?

Required:

  • Undergraduate Degree in a health-related field
  • Minimum of five (5) full-time equivalent years of experience in a clinical health care setting
  • Minimum two (2) full-time equivalent years of experience in Infection Prevention and Control
  • Minimum of 80 hours of IPAC Canada-endorsed infection prevention & control courses.
  • Current certification in Infection Prevention & Control (CIC) from CBIC (Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology Inc.) (preferred), or will obtain within three (3) years of hire (required), and certification to be maintained

Preferred:

  • Certification of competency from a respective college, if a registered professional

  • Experience and/or training in principles of adult education

  • Fluent in French and English

What skills should I possess to succeed in the role?

  • Working knowledge of microbiology, epidemiology, infectious diseases, risk management, safety, and occupational health.
  • Knowledge of current regulations, standards, best practices and recommendations for infection prevention and control (IPAC) issues.
  • Ability to interpret and apply best practices and/or evidence-based guidelines in IPAC to current practice setting.
  • Keep appraised of the latest research and developments in infectious disease prevention and infection control, both locally and nationally.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacology, specifically antimicrobials.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the department’s mandate and operating procedures by taking a significant role in the identification of new projects and processes that fit the program’s goals.
  • Demonstrate infection prevention and control knowledge and skills, specifically in:
    • Surveillance and epidemiology
    • outbreak management
    • auditing of IPAC processes and procedures
    • infectious diseases
    • microbiology
    • risk management and mitigation
    • cleaning, disinfection and sterilization
    • safety and occupational health
    • basic pharmacology, particularly use of antimicrobials
  • Thorough understanding of patient care processes and practices.
  • Knowledge of data presentation and report writing.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, effectively managing overlapping duties and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to perform other duties, as assigned.
  • Analytical, problem solving and evaluation skills to diagnose the nature of the questions received from various departments within the organization.
  • Ability to relate in a positive and productive way to people in all disciplines and with peers.
  • Ability to recognize, assess and prioritize problems.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to suggest areas for improvement in internal processes, including possible solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Conflict management and resolution abilities.
  • Ability to work independently but also be strong team player and collaborate within a group environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships.
  • Ability to develop educational material and effectively teach with knowledge and application of adult learning principles.
  • Advanced computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel) and proficiency with various computer systems and software programs, including database management, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation applications and use of graphic images.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
