##Job summary
The Indigenous Data Researcher-in-Residence will join the Advanced Research Collaboration for Health Integration, Medical Exploration, and Data Synthesis (ARCHIMEDES) team, under the Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI) program, a $109 million initiative funded by the CFREF (Canada First Research Excellence Fund). BHI aims to transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.
The successful candidate will support the integration of Indigenous health data principles into the ARCHIMEDES governance structure. ARCHIMEDES is a multi-institutional platform designed to offer centralized access to high-quality health data, data resources, analytic tools, and open science data capabilities. The platform emphasizes user-centric design, secure data management, and robust governance.
Reporting to the ARCHIMEDES Co-Chairs and working closely with the ARCHIMEDES partners, the Researcher-in-Residence will collaborate with Indigenous partners, communities, and experts to embed Indigenous data values, sovereignty principles and ethical considerations into platform policies, frameworks and processes. This role will be central to ensuring that Indigenous rights are meaningfully reflected in ARCHIMEDES’ governance and operations.
##Key responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement Indigenous data principles within the ARCHIMEDES Data Governance Framework.
- Develop policies, procedures and guidance documents that complement existing governance materials, ensuring Indigenous sovereignty, ethics and perspectives are embedded throughout.
- Engage and consult with Indigenous communities, leaders, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other stakeholders to identify appropriate protocols, rights-based considerations, data expectations.
- Make actionable recommendations for embedding Indigenous perspectives into ARCHIMEDES current data governance structure.
- Collaborate with Indigenous cross-cutter leads across the BHI program to ensure alignment with existing initiatives and long-term organizational objectives.
##Required qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in Law, Indigenous Studies, or a related discipline, with a specialization in Indigenous governance or Indigenous data sovereignty.
- Specialized training or certification in Indigenous Data Sovereignty frameworks (ex: OCAP, CARE, Indigenous research ethics).
- Extensive knowledge of Indigenous data governance in the Canadian context (First Nations, Inuit, Métis).
- Demonstrated experience developing, advising on, or implementing data governance frameworks or policies.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively across diverse groups.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
##Preferred qualifications
- Lived experience related to Indigenous cultures, communities and wellness practices.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is preferred.
- Knowledge of one or more indigenous languages is considered an asset.
##Working conditions
- This position is hybrid, with a combination of on-site and remote work.
- Occasional travel to Indigenous communities may be required depending on engagement needs.
##Deliverables for end of term:
- A detailed roadmap or implementation plan outlining next steps, recommendations, and operational considerations for embedding Indigenous data governance throughout ARCHIMEDES.
