POSITION SUMMARY:
The Plumber is responsible for providing plumbing and pipe-fitting services to the Hospital and, as a member of the Facilities Management team, is responsible for maintaining critical equipment and life safety systems.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspecting, installing, repairing and replacing pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas, drainage, and specialized plumbing/mechanical systems of the Hospital.
- Planning installation by studying blueprints (both hardcopy and electronic), and tracing systems associated with the hospital’s infrastructure.
- Proactively identify and correct mechanical issues so as not to adversely impact normal Hospital operations
- Ability to investigate and troubleshoot using integrated systems techniques
- Performing preventive maintenance on plumbing, mechanical, and hospital specific systems
- Plan and execute mechanical shutdowns as required, minimizing the impact to hospital operations
- Ability to work alone with minimal supervision as required, specifically off-hour shifts and weekends
- Performing mandatory testing and analysis such as water treatment, weekly back-up emergency generators testing
- Participate in a project team environment for own-forces renovations and external contractors associated with capital infrastructure projects
- Knowledgeable in computerized building automation systems (BAS)
- Knowledgeable with fire alarm systems
- Participate in energy management initiatives
- Knowledgeable regarding all application Codes and Regulations associated with plumbing/mechanical work, and healthcare facilities
- Installing pipe assemblies and plumbing fixtures.
- Replacing worn or damaged parts.
- Performing steam-fitting duties.
- Perform steam trap analysis and correct as required
- Estimating material requirements and costs and preparing requisitions.
- Completing work orders and the associated reporting documents in a timely manner using the Hospital’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)- AMMS
- Ability to prioritize work orders
- Training, orientating, and mentoring new staff
- Providing a call-back service as required by the hospital, and have the ability to perform decision-making duties independently. Response to the Hospital while on-call must be within 30 minutes
Perform other duties as may be requested by the Director of Facilities Management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Graduate of grade 12 is required
- Completion of 5-year apprenticeship to attain Ministry of College and Universities (of Ontario) certificate of qualification in the certified trade of “Plumber.” is required
- Current G-1 Gas License is an asset
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years experience as a licensed Plumber is required (post apprenticeship)
- 3 years experience in a Hospital environment an asset

- Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions with and without supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to sustain pressure of work and flexibility in ordering/re-ordering priorities.

- Demonstrated ability to work rapidly under emergency situations.
- Demonstrated ability to direct suggestions, criticism, and questions to appropriate person.
