ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERSliving or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members. Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.

The Ministry of Health/Ministry of Long-Term Care Legal Services Branch of the Civil Law Division, Ministry of the Attorney General has an exciting opportunity for one legal counsel to provide legal support on the interesting, fast-paced and multi-faceted work of the branch, as part of a welcoming, collegial and experienced legal team.

##About the job

Duties Will Include:

  • Providing strategic legal products and advice that convey complex matters in succinct, clear, effective and client friendly summaries that are timely and responsive to client requests, support business/policy solutions and inspire client confidence
  • Providing legal advice in the areas of corporate/commercial, health law, Indigenous law, regulatory, administrative, privacy, enforcement activities, and public law to policy, program and operational clients
  • Providing legal support to clients to support policy development work, issues management, communication products and the development of Ministry policies and operational approaches including statutory interpretation and development and implementation of legislation and regulations
  • Drafting, advising, reviewing and negotiating contracts, transfer payment agreements, procurement documents, memoranda of understanding and other legal documents or instruments
  • Legislative drafting, including regulations and Orders-in-Council
  • Providing statutory interpretation in a variety of areas
  • Providing litigation support and liaising with litigation counsel on various litigation matters
  • Collaboration within the branch and with other legal branches in the development of legal advice
  • Being responsive to clients on a wide variety of policy and operational issues, often on an urgent basis with short turnaround times.

  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

###Knowledge & Skills

  • You have demonstrated knowledge, interest, or experience in at least some of the areas of law that our branch practices
  • You have demonstrated experience or interest in the legislative process, including working on drafting legislation and regulations
  • You have experience drafting and interpreting commercial agreements
  • You have the ability to recognize and assess legal implications in proposed and existing programs and initiatives and able to provide innovative, strategic, helpful and solutions-oriented legal advice on complex, time-sensitive and high-profile issues that arise
  • You have experience with Indigenous consultation and duty to consult considerations
  • You have experience working with litigation counsel to support complex and politically-sensitive litigation matters
  • You have proven excellent and well-organized communication skills (oral and written)
  • You have demonstrated ability to research and analyze a broad variety of legal issues and public policy
  • You are comfortable and effective in leading or supporting the legal briefing of senior officials
  • You have the ability to thrive in a high pressure, high volume legal practice with short turnaround times while working proactively, professionally and cooperatively with sophisticated clients and colleagues
  • You have experience working independently and as part of a team, are collaborative, open to taking new assignments and are committed to a culture of continuous learning and improvement
  • You have demonstrated interest and ability to learn new areas of law, new concepts and approaches swiftly and apply that knowledge
  • You have demonstrated strong judgment, political acuity and analytical skills to help identify, assess, manage and problem solve complex and contentious legal issues
  • You have well developed organizational and time management skills
  • You have demonstrated great client service and have a proven record of building positive relationships with clients and colleagues, inspiring client confidence and of fostering and creating a culture of diversity, anti-racism, equity and wellness in the workplace.
