Reporting to the Director, the Manager Patient Care Services oversees patient care operations during weekend, night and evening shifts. This role ensures the safe, effective, and coordinated delivery of patient care across inpatient programs during non-standard hours, when access to on-site leadership and support services is limited

Duties:

  • Provide leadership oversight of patient care operations during evenings, nights, and weekends, ensuring patient safety, continuity of care, and real‑time clinical decision‑making within established policies and procedures.
  • Monitor patient acuity, behavioural risks, admissions, discharges, and transfers, supporting staff in prioritizing care and responding to emergent situations.
  • Conduct structured rounds to assess patient care status, environmental safety, staffing levels, and clinical risks.
  • Respond to and manage clinical incidents, behavioural escalations, emergency codes, and safety concerns, coordinating interventions and escalation as required.
  • Ensure effective handover and communication between shifts, including documentation of key issues, risks, decisions, and follow‑up actions.
  • Collaborate with Nurse in Charge, Team Leads, and on‑call departments to coordinate timely after‑hours operational and safety responses.
  • Provide visible leadership and decision‑making support to frontline staff, fostering a calm, supportive, and accountable environment.
  • Act as the point of contact for urgent staffing and HR matters during off‑hours, including attendance, sick calls, redeployment, and conflict resolution.
  • Support staffing adjustments, workload management, and staff concerns in real time.
  • Address immediate employee relations concerns, ensuring safety, documentation, and adherence to collective agreements.
  • Escalate formal performance, disciplinary, and labour relations matters to weekday leadership.
  • Provide operational supervision, coaching, and development where assigned direct reports, in coordination with weekday managers.
  • Collaborate with Administrator on Call, Afterhours Managers, and Duty Physician to resolve operational and clinical issues.
  • Ensure staff compliance with mandatory training and relevant policies.
  • Review and respond to incident reports, patient complaints, and safety concerns, ensuring documentation and escalation.
  • Monitor patient safety, staffing, and clinical risk indicators, initiating corrective actions and escalating trends.
    Identify and communicate quality, safety, and operational risks for follow‑up by weekday leadership.
  • Liaise with interdisciplinary teams to support patient care and transitions during off‑hours.
  • Communicate operational updates and risks to Director and weekday leadership.
  • Support unit and department functions to maintain clinical, operational, and safety standards.

Qualifications:

  • College Diploma in Nursing (RN or RPN), Allied Health or relevant healthcare discipline, or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelors in nursing, Allied Health, Healthcare administration, health services management or related field is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in mental health or healthcare settings, including demonstrated experience providing operational or clinical leadership support
  • Registration with an applicable regulatory college where required for the incumbent’s professional background, or equivalent experience in an unregulated healthcare role. Additional leadership or management certifications are preferred
  • Working knowledge of inpatient and outpatient mental health operations and clinical risk management sufficient to support decision-making during evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • Extensive leadership experience in mental health services and program management is preferred.
  • Experience providing management support outside of regular program/business hours is an asset
  • Working knowledge of mental health clinical service delivery and commitment to compassionate, recovery‑oriented, patient‑centred care during evening and night shifts
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Mental Health Act, PHIPA, SDA) to ensure compliance and patient privacy
  • Ability to provide clear direction and decision‑making support in urgent or escalated situations
  • Working knowledge of collective agreements to address staff concerns and escalate appropriately
  • Effective communication with staff, on‑call leadership, physicians, and teams, including documentation and handover
  • Familiarity with healthcare IT systems/EHR for clinical oversight and accurate documentation
  • Proficiency in MS Office, email, and internet for reporting and communication
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.

Salary Range:

58.63 to 67.97 per hour
