    About the role:

    We are actively seeking a Common Core Specialist - Open Pit Mining to provide dedicated Common Core competency validation and Site Signing Authority support for Mining operations. The role exists to help address current operational pressure on existing Signing Authorities by prioritizing required workplace/job observations, verifying performance objectives, and completing defensible competency sign-off for assigned modular training requirements.

    The position supports the employer’s obligation to establish, maintain, and administer applicable Ontario mining modular training programs by ensuring that competency validation, field observations, performance objective sign-offs, and training records are completed consistently, accurately, and in accordance with applicable MLITSD/MTCU modular training requirements.

    Responsibilities:

  • Act as the designated Site Signing Authority, ensuring all competency sign-offs meet Ministry requirements, training standards, and internal expectations.

  • Validate trainee competency through workplace observations, confirming skills can be performed safely, consistently, and independently before sign-off.

  • Document and maintain complete, accurate, and audit-ready training records, including observations, assessments, and competency decisions.

  • Defer or refuse sign-off where competency, documentation, or observation requirements are not fully met; identify and require necessary remedial actions.

  • Conduct and support timely field observations and competency assessments to ensure training progression and reduce operational backlog.

  • Provide coaching, feedback, and guidance to trainees, supervisors, and trainers to support consistent skill development and readiness.

  • Collaborate with Operations, Training, and leadership teams to align training delivery, competency expectations, and operational requirements.

  • Identify training gaps and recommend improvements to programs, tools, and processes to strengthen compliance, consistency, and program integrity.

Qualifications Key Skills & Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary education in mining, industrial operations, trades, training, or a related field is considered an asset; equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Train-the-trainer, evaluator certification, or equivalent internal training is considered an asset.

Relevant Experience:

  • Demonstrated mine operational experience, with sufficient depth to support competency-based training and assessment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Common Core or specialty modules within the applicable area, including performance objectives, workplace observation requirements, and competency validation expectations.
  • Experience supporting or participating in training programs, field-based learning, or competency validation processes is required; experience in a trainer, supervisor, or mentor capacity is considered an asset.
