The Ottawa Quality Control (QC) Laboratory plays a vital role in supporting high‑quality cream yeast production for the Bioenergy sector. As a small and highly collaborative team—including two analysts and a QC Supervisor—we work closely together to ensure timely daily testing and accurate quality results.
Cream yeast contributes directly to Novonesis’ purpose of bettering our world with biology , supporting bioethanol production as a sustainable fuel additive that reduces dependence on fossil fuels and mitigates environmental impact.
The role & your impact
As a Quality Control Lab Technician, you will help secure the consistent quality of cream yeast used in bioethanol production by performing essential microbiology testing and laboratory tasks. Your work ensures reliable data, accurate documentation, and continuous support for manufacturing activities.
Your key responsibilities in this role include:
- Perform routine and non‑routine microbiological analyses following written procedures.
- Use laboratory equipment and methods accurately and appropriately for all assigned tasks.
- Calculate, verify, and record precise data in laboratory notebooks and Excel spreadsheets.
- Conduct routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments as defined in Technical Equipment SOPs.
What you’ll need to be successful in this role
- B.S. (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Microbiology, or a closely related scientific field with no additional experience required, OR a diploma/associate degree in a related field plus a minimum of one year of hands‑on experience.
- Ability to perform accurate laboratory work with strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using standard laboratory instrumentation and following established analytical methods.
- Strong record‑keeping and data‑entry skills.
- Essential competencies: dependability, quality focus, ownership mindset, proactive and self‑driven work style.
Additional skills & interests we value
- Familiarity with GMP, GLP, or industrial microbiology environments.
- Experience working in a production‑support laboratory.
- Interest in continuous improvement and contributing to a highly collaborative team culture.

Working conditions
- Standard 40‑hour workweek, Monday through Friday; overtime may be required.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Work performed in a factory setting with exposure to noise, temperature variation, and dust.
- Regular lifting up to 4.5 kg and occasional lifting up to 25 kg.
Compensation & benefits
- Expected base salary: 50,000–55,000 CAD
- All benefits begin on your first day!
- Group Retirement Plan with up to a 9% company contribution
- Minimum of 3 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks of Wellness Time and 12 paid holidays (statutory and floating vary by province)
