Position Description
We are looking for an experienced Chief Mechanical Estimator to manage the operations of our Mechanical Estimating Department at our Gatineau or Montreal office. The ideal candidate is an operational leader, rigorous and resourceful, capable of ensuring the efficiency, quality, and consistency of the estimating process.
You will have the responsibility of actively supervising and managing the entire estimation process for our mechanical projects across Canada, from opportunity sourcing to bid preparation. You will act as the authority figure and key reference for the estimating team, ensuring the successful execution of tasks. The strategic component (market positioning, major trends) will be conducted in close collaboration with the Estimating Department Director. Your technical expertise, and your skills in team and workflow management will be crucial to maintaining our high level of competitiveness and supporting the company's growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Management and Team Supervision: Manage the workflow of the department. Distribute projects, establish submission deadlines, and directly supervise the team of estimators to ensure quality and adherence to schedules.
- Strategic Collaboration: Work in close collaboration with the Estimating Department Director to define estimating strategies (pricing, competition analysis, opportunity targeting).
- Technical Validation: Act as a technical expert and final verifier of estimates. Ensure the rigor, accuracy of quantity calculations, and alignment of costs with plans and specifications.
- Project Analysis and Coaching: Participate in site visits and information sessions. Coach the team in reviewing all important information to establish clear scopes of work.
- Negotiation and Submissions: Oversee the preparation of detailed submissions. Participate in and/or lead technical negotiations with clients. Present and validate estimates with the Director before submission.
- Process Optimization: Identify and implement methods and tools to improve the operational efficiency of the estimating department.
- Training and Development: Ensure continuous technical training for junior and senior estimators, and foster the development of their expertise.
- Business Relationships: Maintain and develop strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and technical partners.
Skills and Qualifications
- A minimum of 8 years of experience as a Mechanical Estimator, ideally in the commercial or industrial sectors.
- Operational Leadership: Proven ability to manage the workflow and motivate the team. Strong aptitude for problem-solving and prompt decision-making.
- In-Depth Technical Expertise: Advanced proficiency in reading and analyzing complex plans and specifications in building and industrial mechanics. Mastery of estimating tools (software, databases).
- Communication and Negotiation: Excellent oral and written communication in both French and English. Skill in influencing and negotiating contracts.
- Rigor and Organization: Great attention to detail and excellent ability to structure, organize, and prioritize department work to meet tight deadlines.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to inspire team collaboration, strong social aptitude, open-mindedness, and excellent stress management.
- Education: Hold a College Diploma (DEC) in an appropriate field (Building Mechanics, Construction, Building Estimation and Evaluation Technology). A university degree is an asset.
