Job Summary
“Flax to Fibre” is an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Sustainable Agriculture Research Initiatives (SARI) SSHRC-NSERC research stream. The PI for the project, Jennifer Green (Textiles) is at NSCAD University. The project valorizes flax fibre as a product and byproduct feedstock for textiles, construction, and agriculture that is local, sustainable, and low carbon. It rejuvenates a lapsed flax fibre industry in Nova Scotia. Our research group is developing the utilization of flax shive (and other agriculture residues and byproducts from the processing of flax fibre) in construction materials. Other research disciplines supporting the work are in Civil Engineering, Agriculture, Chemical Engineering, Management, Industrial Engineering, and Sustainability.
Peter Gilgan Foundation is a related research project exploring the utilization of flax shive in isolation. This is not interdisciplinary in nature, but provides in-depth characterization of flax’s use in cementitious block and loose fill insulation applications.
Reporting to the Director, Material Body Environment Laboratory (MBEL) the Research Coordinator supervises and executes a complex, multifactorial research topic and methodology. It is an active, integrated administrative and research performance role. It exists to ensure the integrative execution of project activities and outcomes internal to the research group and external with project partners. The job will seek to support the completion of prototypes, demonstrator, and material characterizations.
Key Responsibilities

Coordinate administrative operations across multiple grants, including budgeting, project timelines, data management, publications, and reporting.

Serve as the primary point of contact with university administration, external collaborators, industry partners, and sponsor organizations.

Supervise grant‑funded activities delivered by team members, including prototype and demonstrator development, carbon accounting, materials testing, and technical documentation.

Independently and collaboratively execute technical project work, including prototype and demonstrator design, documentation, and construction.

Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables to ensure compliance with funding and reporting requirements.

Lead project health and safety activities by maintaining WHMIS certification, updating and enforcing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and ensuring team compliance.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications

Professional architectural degree with field experience in design and construction.

Experience in project management, in construction or other industries.

Understanding of sustainable construction principles and architectural design methodologies.

Experience in carbon accounting.

Ability to organize projects, work well with others, support direct-reports in a collaborative design and research environment.
