Job Summary The Base/Prep Superintendent is responsible for all aspect of base/prep. This would include but not be limited to, assisting estimators, customer liaison, report writing, project organization, scheduling, implementation and supervision, equipment utilization and maintenance, quality control, personnel and training, as well as safety and other related tasks. The construction work is varied including all facets of small civil jobs to large municipal and highway projects.

Main Responsibilities

  • Training and implementation of safety and other company policies and programs.
  • Project implementation, schedule, and supervision.
  • Supervision and improvement of work processes.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and excellent product and service quality.
  • Maintain close professional communications with clients and the public.
  • Scheduling of crews and equipment.
  • Monitor and approve employee timesheets.
  • Monitor and approve subcontractors billing.
  • Monitor and approve quantities.
  • Work closely with quality control and production departments.
  • Work with estimating.
  • Maintain contact with general contractors and sub-contractors.
  • Supervise numerous projects and many Base crews.
  • Maintain company image (i.e. clean truck, proper personal image).
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications Education, Training and Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Construction, Civil Engineering, or related field is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ license with clean driving abstract.
  • Must have reliable transportation

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5-8 years construction experience in base/prep.
  • Extensive applicable field experience.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in all aspects of subgrade and gravelling operations.
  • GPS experience is an asset.
  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labour under adverse weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with the materials, tools, and machinery used.
  • Knowledge of the road construction industry.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
  • Must be able to communicate well with co-workers.
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work cooperatively, independently, and with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Ability to use or learn Microsoft Excel and Heavy Job.

Working Conditions

  • Overtime as required.
  • Travel as required.
  • A portion of work may be performed in an indoor setting and may include a combination of standing, sitting, and walking. Sitting for extended periods of time is required.
  • Manual dexterity required to use computer and peripherals.
  • A portion of work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, oil, asphalt, and toxic and flammable substances.
  • The ability to stand, crouch, and kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Required to perform tasks that involve heavy lifting, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to lift 10 lbs regularly.
  • Use of personal protection equipment is required.
  • Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear required when working outdoors.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in areas that are dusty and/or dirty.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
  • Must comply with all company policies.
