Position Overview

The Project Manager, Urban Design, VMC is responsible for coordinating and managing major studies related to urban design policy, guidelines and standards as well as recommending and implementing goals and strategies to address the planning and physical development of the VMC through architectural form, block structure, streetscapes, green infrastructure, integration of transit infrastructure, parks and open spaces, and other aspects of urban design associated with the public realm and natural environment. Responsible for reviewing development proposal applications and writing staff comments on the urban design portions of applications for plans of subdivision, official plan and zoning by-law amendments, site plans and other reports to ensure appropriateness. Other responsibilities include all VMC-related administration of the City’s Design Review Panel, liaising with other City departments, external agencies, community representatives and stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

• Successful completion of a University Degree in Architecture, Urban Design or Landscape Architecture from an accredited university and registered as a professional Architect with Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) or Landscape Architect with Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) and Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) or Planner with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI). Possesses or willingness to obtain a certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP).

• Minimum of five (5) years of municipal-related, urban design experience in high-density urban environments; including a minimum of two (2) years of project management experience.

•A thorough knowledge of planning and urban design principles, concepts, practices, methods, legislation and GTA context and roles of different levels of government.

•Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage large city planning and urban design projects and possesses strong time management skills.

•Excellent design, report writing, problem-solving and leadership skills.

•Knowledge of planning, development and urban design standards.

•Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies.

•Proficiency with AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office s well as proficiency with other applications of specialized software relevant to the technical specialty.

•Ability to identify issues, challenges and opportunities and propose solutions.

•Ability to negotiate/facilitate, build consensus and present information to varied audiences.

•Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively address technical and non-technical matters.

•Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

•Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and reliable vehicle for use on corporate business are an asset.

•Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required.
