Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager/Quality Leader, Laboratory Services, through the Team Leader, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is responsible for specimen collection which includes obtaining samples by phlebotomy or micro-sample techniques. The MLA performs and explains procedures for ECG's and special tests i.e. Glucose Tolerance test, Sweat test etc. Availability to work in a rotating schedule to include days, evenings, nights, weekends and statutory holidays is required. Shifts are comprised of 8 and 12 hour shifts.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Blood sample procurement.
- Preparing samples for analysis or referral i.e. separation, accessioning (including referral specimens).
- Preparing reagant.
- Performing ECG's.
- Preparing and routine staining of smears i.e. blood films and cover-slipping of slide preparations.
- Planting and streaking of microbiology specimens and controls, including set up of anaerobic and C02 jas, for reading by a MLT.
- Sub-culturing of stock cultures in Bacteriology.
- Titrations using a pH meter.
- Urinalysis (excluding microsopic).
- Recording quality control results for interpretation and approval by MLT as listed above.
- Operating automated instruments after proper functioning has been established by MLT.
- Setting up of erythrocyte sedimentation rates.
- Setting up serology tests, i.e. occult blood, pregnancy tests (to be read and interpreted immediately by a MLT).
- Maintaining equipment.
- Monitoring temperature of thermally controlled equipment.
- Filing of records and retrieval of files.
- Washing of glassware, general housekeeping duties.
- Preparing of kits.
- Ordering blood collection supplies using pre-printed requistion.
- Understanding and performing duties in accordance with the policies, processes, and procedures of the Quality Management System (IQMH Accreditation Requirements).
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Charge Technologist, Laboratory Manager/Quality Leader, or the Laboratory Medical Director.
Qualifications

Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent required.

Successful completion of Laboratory Assistant Training Program is required.

Certification with Ontario Society of Medical Technologists (OSMT), MLPAO or Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) required.

Minimum two (2) years technical training/experience in a laboratory setting, hospital laboratory preferred.

Demonstrated ability to communicate proficiently, both verbal and written.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Demonstrated ability to problem solve independently.

Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records.

Satisfactory work performance and attendance record required
