DIRECTOR, HUMAN RESOURCES
Mississauga, Ontario
Building Materials
The Opportunity
Our client is a highly respected Building Materials brand with a strong presence across Canada and the United States. Known for their product selection, service-focused culture, market reputation, and commitment to customer relationships, the company has established themselves as a recognized leader within the industry.
While the organization has grown significantly over the years, they have never lost the entrepreneurial mindset and collaborative culture that helped drive their success. Consistently certified as a one of "Canada's Best Workplaces", the company continues to invest heavily in its people, leadership, and workplace culture.
As part of their continued growth, they currently seek a Director of Human Resources to lead the HR function and serve as a trusted business partner to employees and leadership alike. Reporting directly to senior leadership and supported by an (1) experienced HR team member, this role provides proactive and comprehensive HR services to internal stakeholders across the business.
A key member of the Leadership Team, the HR Director partners closely with leaders across the business to support workplace planning, employee engagement and relations, team development, organizational growth, and the adoption and cultural integration of performance management practices.
The Role
The Director, Human Resources will provide both strategic leadership and hands-on support across all aspects of the employee lifecycle (100+ employees, non-union). This is not a role for someone who prefers to operate solely at a strategic level. Rather, the successful candidate will enjoy being visible within the business, building relationships across departments, and supporting employees at every level of the organization.
A primary focus of the position will be the successful implementation and ongoing management of a newly developed performance management framework. Working closely with leadership and department managers, the Director will help establish clear expectations, strengthen accountability, support employee development, and ensure consistency across the organization.
The role will also oversee recruitment and selection activities across both salaried and hourly positions, helping attract and retain top talent while supporting workforce planning initiatives.
Employee relations will represent another key area of responsibility, requiring a leader who is approachable, fair, and capable of navigating issues with professionalism and sound judgment.
Beyond talent and performance management, the Director will oversee compensation and benefits administration, payroll processes (not administration), policy development, compliance initiatives, and employment legislation requirements. This individual will serve as a sponsor for Health & Safety programs and the employee social committee, helping maintain the strong culture and engagement levels that have become a hallmark of the organization.
Working closely with senior leadership, department managers, and frontline employees, the Director will act as the face of Human Resources across the business, balancing strategic priorities with day-to-day support and execution.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be an experienced Human Resources Director with a strong generalist background and a demonstrated ability to support growing organizations in fast-paced environments. They will understand how to operate as both a strategic advisor and a hands-on contributor, recognizing that successful HR leadership requires visibility, accessibility, and partnership throughout the organization.
Experience within product-based industries such as Building Materials (distribution), consumer products, industrial products, or related sectors will be highly valued. The ability to work effectively with employees ranging from executive leadership through to warehouse and operational teams is essential.
This opportunity is well suited to an individual who enjoys culture building, leadership development, employee engagement, and helping businesses create environments where people can perform at their best. The successful candidate will bring strong business acumen, excellent interpersonal skills, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach to Human Resources leadership.
Requirements & Qualifications
Progressive Human Resources leadership experience, including experience operating as the senior HR leader or a key member of an HR leadership team. Strong generalist expertise across employee relations, recruitment, performance management, compensation and benefits, training and development, payroll oversight, compliance, and Health & Safety. Experience supporting a product-based business environment. Strong working knowledge of employment legislation and HR best practices. Proven ability to build trust and credibility across all levels of an organization. Experience supporting organizational growth while maintaining a strong employee culture and engagement strategy. CHRL, CHRP, MBA, or equivalent Human Resources designation and education is required.
Why Join?
This is an opportunity to join a deeply-established, and highly regarded organization that has earned a reputation for exceptional customer service, strong market presence, quality products, and a culture that genuinely values its people. Supported by an engaged leadership team and a solid HR foundation, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence the future direction of the business while helping preserve the entrepreneurial culture that has been instrumental to its success.
For an HR leader who enjoys working both tactically and strategically across the business, partnering with people, and making a visible impact, this role offers both challenge and long-term opportunity.
