About the role

Wyvern is making something big . Our vision is to provide actionable intelligence from space, anywhere in the solar system. To achieve this, we need to entirely reimagine how satellite Earth observation is done.

We’re a rapidly growing space company in Western Canada, powered by humans who are passionate about space and are redesigning the satellite to enable a sustainable future for humanity. Wyvern has been through Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch and has raised >USD$25M in pre-seed, seed, and non-dilutive funding. If you’re excited by the prospect of creating a better earth from space, we want you on our team.

What we're working on

Wyvern is revolutionizing Earth observation with cutting-edge hyperspectral imagery. Hyperspectral images contain more colours than other types of imagery, meaning these images capture the spectral signature of the object, field, building, etc. that we’re observing. Our Dragonette constellation delivers the highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral data from space currently available, empowering organizations to uncover hidden inefficiencies, drive innovation, and build a more sustainable future.

We’re seeking a Data Scientist with a product mindset to uncover new applications of our hyperspectral imagery and translate those insights into compelling product materials. In this role, you’ll bridge technical understanding with customer-facing impact: investigating use cases, validating value, and shaping content that supports our product documents and marketing. You’ll be cross-appointed to both our Revenue and Data Solutions teams, ensuring you stay closely connected to customer needs while continuing to grow your data science and machine learning expertise.

Who you are

  • You take initiative, guided by curiosity and a genuine desire to explore new ideas.
  • You have strong data storytelling skills, including producing visualizations that highlight key insights.
  • You have the ability to translate technical analyses into clear, compelling written or visual outputs (e.g., tutorials, use cases, or marketing material)
  • You have experience applying data science and machine learning techniques to real-world datasets.
  • You have demonstrated experience working with satellite, aerial, or drone imagery in tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS, or similar.
  • You have experience working with either multispectral or hyperspectral data.
  • You are proficient in Python for data interpretation, with the ability to write clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
  • You are familiar with image processing packages (e.g., GDAL, rasterio, PIL, OpenCV), basic machine learning methods, and version control (e.g., Git).
  • You work well independently but know when to ask for support.
  • You have strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with technical and non-technical teams.
  • If you’re a recent graduate, you were involved in extracurricular team projects that challenged your technical skills (ex. hackathons, robotics club, etc.).

Candidates must have a B.Sc. or higher in remote sensing, geospatial science, computer science, data science, or a related field, or have equivalent industry experience (4+ years). You must be eligible to work in Canada; only Canadian Resident or current Canadian Work Permit holder applicants will be considered for this position. Bonus Points If You Have

  • Experience applying remote sensing to forestry applications (e.g., forest health monitoring, biomass estimation, species mapping, or wildfire risk assessment)
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) for large-scale geospatial data processing.
  • Experience working as a data scientist within product development, product management, or product marketing teams.
  • Experience with deep learning and large language models.

What you will be doing

You Will

  • Work directly with Wyvern’s 31-band, 5.3 m GSD hyperspectral imagery using QGIS or similar geospatial tools.
  • Apply remote sensing principles and methods to analyze and interpret complex geospatial data.
  • Investigate applications of our hyperspectral imagery to real-world issues in forestry, agriculture, mining, energy, environmental monitoring, and other sectors.
  • Uncover trends and extract actionable insights from imagery, then translate those insights into clear, compelling copy for product and marketing materials.
  • Develop tutorials, use-case examples, and demonstrations (written, visual, and video) for Wyvern’s Knowledge Center.
  • Work closely with the Software and Data teams to improve our internal image processing pipeline, including improving in-house machine learning models.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code to support data processing and analysis workflows.
  • Create visualizations (e.g., PCA outputs) that highlight insights from our imagery and collaborate with marketing to share them effectively.
  • Stay current with the latest advances in remote sensing research and apply innovative analysis techniques to Wyvern’s data.
  • Identify and engage with academic partners exploring relevant research topics, fostering collaborations to expand hyperspectral use cases.

What to expect from Wyvern

  • We have all the best aspects of startup culture including flexible working hours & support from across the team whenever you need it.
  • We give ample vacation time, a health benefits package, and stock options.
  • We’re small but rapidly growing. The systems you craft will be foundational to Wyvern’s success and you will get the unique opportunity to grow with the company.
  • This is a full-time, permanent position based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Remote work is an option for exceptional candidates with remote work experience.
