Position Description
The McGill University Department of Critical Care Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position as a Clinician-Teacher at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at CIUSSS ODIM: St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMH) in Montreal’s Côte-de-Neiges borough. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
McGill’s Department of Critical Care Medicine is widely recognized for its outstanding patient care, well-established training program, and contributions to fundamental as well as clinical research. St. Mary’s Hospital Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University. It is located in the city of Montreal, province of Quebec.
St. Mary’s is a community hospital with an important teaching mandate for trainees in multiple disciplines including internal medicine, critical care medicine and family medicine.

As a Clinician-Teacher, the successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Critical Care, where they will be expected to demonstrated aptitude, enthusiasm and excellence in clinical evaluation. The successful candidate will be expected to be a clinical intensivist, a focus on implementation of echocardiography and ultrasonography in clinical practice and education would be encouraged. The incumbent will join a multidisciplinary and comprehensive adult intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, with cross-appointment at the Lakeshore General Hospital.
The successful candidate will be expected to attend in both units and dedicate time to clinical teaching and its administration. Protected non-clinical time will be allocated to support scholarly activity, according to the candidate’s academic mandate and the departmental needs. This position is ideally suited for candidates seeing a long-term clinical career with pedagogic, research and administrative opportunities. A minority appointment in a hospital department that reflects the core training of the candidate will also be supported, for example, in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesia or their subspecialties.
Clinical responsibilities will include attending staff in the intensive care unit, as well as overnight critical care on-call coverage. Intensive care unit rotations involve daily rounds, daytime code blue coverage and overnight call duties for one week consecutively, including weekends.
We are seeking a professional with a proven track record of excellent patient care, a passion for medical education and strong interpersonal skills. Prospective candidates with a background in any relevant medical field, provided their expertise aligns with the division’s strategic goals, will be considered.
The Successful Candidate Will Also Be Expected To
Provide high-quality adult critical care with the CIUSSS ODIM ICUs, including participation in the on-call schedule Contribute to the academic activities across the Critical Care Deparment- affliated hospitals.
Develop and maintain an academic profile aligned with their respective position
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and allied health professionals.
The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., teaching, supervision of graduate students and residents, research and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.
Candidates Must
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Hold an MD degree and must hold, or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec; Have completed subspecialty training in Critical Care Medicine; Be certified in Critical Care Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent); Be certified by the Collège des médecins du Québec; Have completed, or are in the process of completing subspecialty training in Adult Critical Care Medicine; Demonstrate excellence in, and commitment to , clinical care and academic medicine; Demonstrated an interest in inclusive teaching; Possess strong interpersonal and leadership skills; Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
