About the role

About Voltera

Voltera is a rapidly scaling technology company that has been driving change in the additive electronics industry since 2013. Our tools help the world’s most innovative minds solve previously unsolvable problems. Our customers, across the board, are changing the way we think about electronics and its applications.

Our first product, V-One, is a multi-functional PCB printer that enables fast iteration. Product developers and educators benefit from V-One's versatility and rapid prototyping capabilities.

Our second product, NOVA, is a materials dispensing system for flexible hybrid electronics. It was designed to meet the unique demands of novel electronics prototyping and materials research, providing precision dispensing on numerous rigid and flexible substrates.

We’re a tight-knit company looking for ambitious, talented individuals. We value the importance of team culture, and strive to create a work environment where you feel empowered through knowledge, supported by your colleagues, passionate about your work, and motivated to drive the growth of the company.

About the Job

  • Contribute to the design and development of software tools for motion control, calibration, and sensor feedback in early-stage R&D.

  • Build and maintain Python-based test rigs, proof-of-concept tools, and motion experiments used to evaluate new designs and subsystems.

  • Prototype novel workflows that automate alignment, tuning, or self-test routines for Mechanical systems.

  • Support firmware and electrical teams by validating control signals, debugging motion anomalies, and logging system behavior under test.

  • Participate in feasibility investigations for new actuators, encoders, or sensing approaches — from quick-bench tests to scripted motion evaluations.

  • Assist in building infrastructure that supports iterative hardware-software experimentation (e.g., CLI tools, logging pipelines, debug dashboards).

  • Translate experimental setups into documented internal tools or candidate product features.

  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, firmware, and UX teams to explore integrated design solutions across disciplines.

Working conditions

Working from the office in Waterloo at least three days per week.

About You

  • Post-secondary education in Mechatronics, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Proficient in Python for systems development, automation, and hardware interaction (e.g., PySerial, asyncio, CLI tools).

  • Strong understanding of motion control systems (e.g., steppers, encoders, closed-loop feedback, limit switches).

  • Experience working in a Linux development environment with familiarity in shell scripting and serial interfaces.

  • Capable of reading and interpreting schematics, mechanical drawings, and sensor datasheets to guide integration and debugging.

  • Comfortable working in bench-level R&D setups with partial or evolving hardware.

  • Strong attention to detail, with a systems mindset and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Nice to haves

  • Experience developing internal calibration or test tools for electromechanical systems.

  • Exposure to low-level motion control protocols (e.g., step/dir, CAN, UART-based motor drivers).

  • Familiarity with precision system behavior: backlash, thermal drift, mechanical compliance, noise isolation.

  • Interest in automating verification and tuning processes for repeatability and scale.

  • Exposure to graphical or web-based diagnostic interfaces (e.g., internal dashboards, streaming sensor plots).

  • Experience in rapid prototyping environments or agile hardware/software development teams.

  • Background in robotics, automation, or custom gantry-based systems.

Why We’re Awesome

  • We’re a scaling company - you’re hired to have a voice, not to be a cog.

  • Three weeks' vacation to start, plus a paid end-of-year company shutdown.

  • Flexible work hours.

  • Family-friendly work culture.

  • Collaborative work environment.

  • Located in the growing tech hub of Waterloo, Ontario, close to restaurants and easily accessible by public transit.
