Senior Research Assistant, Development and Delivery of ROS (Robot Operating System) Course
About the role
Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
The Senior Research Assistant will work with Profs. Bidinosti (Physics) and Beck (Applied Computer Science) to develop and deliver a lecture series / course on the Robot Operating System (ROS).
The goal is to introduce students to the principles of ROS, with a focus on applications in robotics and imaging systems.
Duties:
January to April 2026:
- Work with Profs. Bidinosti and Beck to define the structure of the lecture series / course
- Research and develop course material on ROS
- Explore and decide on hardware to be purchased for hands-on learning in the lecture series / course
- Research and obtain quotes for appropriate equipment and demonstrations
- Develop a course outline and delivery schedule
- Work with local industry to arrange guest speakers as well as site visits
May to June 2026:
- Deliver the lecture series / course in May 2026
- Organize guest lectures and site visits
- Assess success of the lecture series / course after it is complete, including receiving feedback from participants
- Provide a summary of the assessment along with suggestions for the future course
- Organize and deliver all lectures, teaching materials and equipment to UWinnipeg for future use
Qualifications:
- MSc or PhD in the physical sciences (e.g. engineering, physics, computer science).
- Experience developing and delivering university level courses.
- Experience with computer programming.
- Experience with microcontrollers (e.g. RaspberryPi, NVIDIA Jetson).
- Prior experience with ROS and robotics would be an asset.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from January 5, 2026 - June 26, 2026, and the estimated total hours of work will be 400-500 hours.
