About the role

Overview

The Seniors Navigation and Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting older adults by providing hands on comprehensive support in accessing federal, provincial and local services. This position requires a compassionate individual who can guide seniors through various processes to access supports online, in person or other means required, helping them maintain independence and improve their quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Form Filling Assistance: Help seniors complete necessary paperwork, including medical forms, insurance documents, and other official paperwork, ensuring accuracy and understanding.
  • Technology Support: Offer guidance on using technology, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. This includes setting up devices, teaching basic functions, and assisting with online tasks like email, social media, and video calls.
  • In-Person Appointment Support: Accompany seniors to appointments, offering physical and emotional support. Help with understanding and remembering information shared by professionals.
  • Phone Call Assistance: Make phone calls on behalf of seniors to arrange services, inquire about benefits, or resolve issues related to utilities, healthcare, or other personal matters.
  • Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for seniors, ensuring their needs and preferences are respected in all interactions with service providers and caregivers.
  • Outreach: Liaise with local programs such as the Farmers Market Nutrition program, Seniors Angel Tree, Seniors First BC, Canadian Volunteer Income Tax Program to identify and assist seniors who qualify to enroll and support to receive.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in gerontology, social work, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with seniors or in a support role is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of PIPPA and demonstrated competency in confidentiality practices.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
    • Proficiency with technology and the ability to teach others.
    • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
    • Empathy and patience in dealing with diverse senior populations.
  • Attributes:
    • Compassionate and understanding towards the unique challenges faced by seniors.
    • Reliable, with a strong sense of responsibility and integrity.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable vehicle and Class 5 license
  • Valid criminal record check for working with vulnerable populations.
