Job Summary:

The General Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for the Regent Theatre, a dual-purpose facility serving as both the University’s largest academic classroom and a commercially operated performing arts venue. Reporting to the Director, Ancillary Services, the General Manager is accountable for financial performance, operational excellence, regulatory compliance, workforce leadership, and community engagement.

The role is responsible for developing and executing a business plan that balances academic priorities with revenue generation, ensuring the Theatre operates safely, efficiently, and in alignment with University policies and reputational standards. The General Manager determines staffing requirements, leads and develops theatre staff, manages budgets and contracts, oversees event execution, and fosters strong relationships with promoters faculty, students, and community partners.

Responsibilities/accountabilities:

1. Theatre Operations & Event Management

  • Oversees academic and commercial scheduling
  • Ensures contract compliance throughout event planning and execution
  • Manages event logistics including coordination of clients, technical teams and internal partners
  • Coordinates maintenance activities
  • Oversees post-event reconciliation

2. Workforce Planning & Human Resource Management

  • Determines staffing needs and recruits, trains and schedules staff
  • Evaluates staff and manages performance
  • Delegates work assignments to team members
  • Builds and sustains a positive team culture and staff engagement

3. Strategic Leadership & Business Development

  • Informs and implements multi-year business plan ensuring operational decisions and initiatives support long-term strategic priorities
  • Recommends, tracks and reports on Key Performance Indicators
  • Identifies new revenue opportunities
  • Recommends capital improvements to support program quality, operational efficiency and growth
  • Ensures programming aligns with University values

4. Financial Management & Administration

  • Assists in the development and management of budgets
  • Reports on financial performance, oversees reconciliation and implements cost controls
  • Negotiates agreements within signing authority

5. Marketing, Community & Client Relations

  • Plans and executes Theatre marketing initiatives
  • Negotiates rental packages
  • Builds relationships with promoters and community
  • Oversees promotional communications

6. Health, Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensures compliance with occupational health and safety legislation
  • Oversees emergency preparedness activities
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with accessibility legislation and internal policy
  • Reviews technical riders for safety
  • Reports safety incidents in accordance with University and legislative requirements

Required Skills:

  • Strong financial and analytical skills
  • Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and diplomacy skills

Required Education:

  • Completion of a three-year post-secondary program in Theatre Operations, Arts Administration, Business or related field
  • Additional training in accounting, facility management, or technical theatre preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered
  • Verification of Academic credentials may be required

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of progressive leadership experience in theatre or live event management
  • Experience managing budgets, contracts, staffing, and ticketing systems

Required Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of theatre operations
  • Understanding of health, safety, and regulatory compliance requirements
