The Payroll, Benefits & Compensation Specialist is a hands-on HR Generalist with deep specialization in Payroll, Benefits Administration, HR Information Systems (Dayforce), and Compensation. You will help ensure smooth, accurate, and compliant operations for both Canadian and U.S. workforce populations (approx. 600+ employees). You will partner closely with HR, Finance, and Leadership to deliver excellent service, maintain data integrity, and drive improvements in HR operations and reporting.
You will be part of the HR Team and will report to the Chief People Officer.
Key Accountabilities:
Payroll
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing (biweekly) for Canadian and U.S. employees
- Ensure payroll compliance with federal, provincial, and state-level regulations (tax withholdings, remittances, statutory deductions, benefits deductions, reporting)
- Reconcile payroll accounts and liaise with Finance/Accounting for month-end close and audits
- Calculate and process special payments: bonuses, commissions, retroactive payments, terminations, leaves, garnishments, etc.
- Resolve payroll queries from employees in a timely and professional manner
- Maintain payroll policies, standard operating procedures, and documentation
Benefits & Total Rewards
- Administer employee benefits programs (health, dental, life, disability, pension/retirement plans, wellness, etc.) for both Canada and U.S. populations
- Act as liaison to benefits carriers and third-party providers; manage renewals, plan changes, open enrollment, and audits
- Educate employees on benefit plans, eligibility, claims, and enrollment
- Support wellness / perks / incentive programs aligned with organizational strategy
- Monitor and benchmark benefit trends, make recommendations for plan enhancements
HRIS & Data Management
- Maintain and optimize the HRIS system (employee master data, workflows, configurations, security, etc.)
- Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and consistency across systems (HRIS, payroll, time & attendance, etc.)
- Develop HRIS reports, dashboards, and analytics for HR leadership, Finance, and senior management
- Lead system upgrades, enhancements, testing, and rollouts
- Support integrations with other systems (payroll, ATS, etc.)
- Partner with HRIS Management Team with parent company to initiate necessary changes, updates and upgrades.
Compensation
- Assist in developing and maintaining compensation structures, salary bands, and pay policies (Canada & U.S.)
- Conduct benchmarking and market analyses to inform competitive pay practices
- Collaborate with HR and business leaders to support salary reviews, merit increases, bonus programs, and equity adjustments
- Provide compensation-related guidance and support to managers and employees
- Ensure compensation actions (promotions, transfers, adjustments) are accurately implemented in systems
General HR & Cross-functional Support
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on payroll, benefits, HRIS, and compensation matters
- Partner with other HR team members (talent acquisition, employee relations, learning & development) to ensure seamless HR service delivery
- Support audits, regulatory compliance, reporting (e.g. government filings, tax remittances)
- Identify process efficiency improvements and implement best practices
- Assist with ad hoc HR projects, policy reviews, and special initiatives
