What qualifications are we looking for?

At YMCA Calgary we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:

  • The successful candidate must be at least 18 years of age

  • Supervisory experience is an asset

  • National Lifeguard - Pool certification

  • National Lifeguard- Waterpark certification is an asset

  • National Lifeguard Instructor (NLI) and/or YMCA YSI Champion considered an asset

  • Lifesaving Instructor would be considered an asset?

  • YMCA Swim Instructor or Lifesaving Swim for Life Instructor certification (YSI certification preferred, and must be completed within 6 months of employment)

  • Current Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. It is considered an asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John's Ambulance

  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required

  • Three professional references

What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Duties and Responsibilities include;

  • Ensure a physically and psychologically safe environment for all staff, volunteers and patrons

  • Supervise a team of approximately 30-140 Lifeguards and Swim Instructors, Aquatics Leads, Leadership Instructors and Coaches, and Aquatics Attendants (the latter position, and number of staff, depending on the branch)

  • Create sessional and interim staff schedules and program sets based on annual budget goals. Monitor changes of shifts and ensure adequate coverage

  • Maintain inventories of aquatic supplies and equipment and complete purchasing within budget parameters

  • Recruit staff to meet department needs, performing applicant short listing, interviews, reference reviews and onboarding paperwork

  • Organize new staff orientations. Develop, deliver and/or oversee coaching plans on an as-needed basis for staff development. Participate in ILT in-service planning, including the direct delivery of training modules and clinics

  • Ensure all staff adhere to YMCA Calgary Policies and Procedures in relation to the safe operation of the aquatic center and programs, including Lifesaving Society Standards as applicable

  • Collaborate with the Aquatics Centre Manager and Human Resources to proactively respond to staff performance concerns

  • Complete annual staff performance evaluations and goal setting

  • Ensure staff certifications are current

  • Schedule monthly drills and anti-entrapment inspections. Participate in quarterly SEE Audit reviews and pool inspections

  • Respond promptly to member concerns and inform the Aquatic Centre Manager of unresolved or escalating issues

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service by being friendly, courteous and helpful to all patrons

  • Ensure YMCA Service standards are met relating to the experiences of members, program participants and other pool users

  • Monitor program registrations, and complete class transfers based on prerequisites, safety requirements and participant needs

  • Ensure pool schedules are posted online and accurate

  • Ensure the regular and accurate documentation of pool statistics including program attendance, report card completion, head counts, daily tasks and water tests

  • Ensure payroll entries are accurately monitored and approved on time

  • Support the Aquatic Centre Manager as needed

  • 10 hours of in-ratio hours, including Duty Manager shifts, Lifeguard and Swim Instructor shift coverage, pool inspections, staff orientations and training, leadership course delivery, etc.

  • Support the branch General Manager in ensuring the YMCA has a positive presence in the local community through special events or community engagement opportunities

  • Support the branch in registration, Duty Manager shifts, and ongoing special events

  • Participate in the Staff and Volunteer aspect of the Annual Campaign
