Stair Design Technician / Field & Production Coordinator

You see how they become a staircase. Spindle Stairs & Railings is looking for a detail-driven Stair Design Technician / Field & Production Coordinator to join our Stair Division. This is a hands-on technical position combining AutoCAD design, blueprint interpretation, field measurements, production coordination and real-time problem-solving. You will help take each construction-grade staircase from the original blueprint to the production floor—and ultimately into a new Calgary home. This is not a desk job disguised as a construction job. One day you may be designing stairs in AutoCAD. The next, you may be measuring a stair opening on site, resolving a construction issue or coordinating priorities with our production team. Your Role
Reporting to the Stair Division Manager, you will help manage the technical and operational flow of our construction-grade stair projects. You will turn blueprints and field measurements into accurate AutoCAD drawings, prepare production work orders, coordinate schedules and serve as the first point of contact when site issues arise.

What You’ll Be DoingStair Design and Blueprint Review
Design construction-grade stairs using AutoCAD. Produce accurate stair drawings from architectural blueprints or field measurements. Read and interpret residential construction plans, elevations and stair details. Review floor-to-floor heights, stair openings, wall locations, landings and layouts. Complete stair takeoffs from builder plans. Identify missing information, conflicts or potential construction problems before production begins. Revise drawings when plans or site conditions change.
Field Measurements and Site Support
Visit new-home construction sites to measure construction-grade stair openings. Confirm that actual site conditions match the architectural drawings. Accurately record dimensions, elevations, openings and other critical details. Communicate professionally with site supervisors, builders and trades. Act as the first point of contact for construction-grade stair site issues. Investigate problems and work with the appropriate team members to find practical solutions.
Production Coordination
Create clear work orders for labour, materials and stair components. Assign work orders to the appropriate production team members. Communicate project requirements and priorities to production. Coordinate stair manufacturing and delivery schedules. Monitor projects as they move from design through production and delivery. Update the team when drawings, measurements, timelines or priorities change. Help ensure that production has the correct information before work begins. Support the production team when technical clarification is required.

You will know you are succeeding when: Production receives clear, accurate and complete drawings. Stair measurements are correct the first time. Potential problems are identified before manufacturing begins. Site issues are addressed quickly and professionally. Work orders contain the information production needs. Builders and site supervisors know who to contact. Stair projects move smoothly from design to manufacturing and delivery. The finished staircase matches the drawing, the opening and the customer’s expectations.
You’ll Be a Great Fit If You…
Enjoy solving construction and design challenges. Can visualize how a two-dimensional drawing becomes a three-dimensional staircase. Notice when a measurement or detail does not look right. Are comfortable asking questions instead of making costly assumptions. Communicate clearly with office staff, production employees, builders and site supervisors. Can manage multiple projects, revisions and deadlines. Take ownership of problems and help move them toward a solution. Are equally comfortable at a computer, on a production floor and on a construction site. Take pride in accurate work and understand that small details matter.
Experience and Qualifications
Basic to mid-level AutoCAD experience. Ability to read and interpret residential construction blueprints. Familiarity with Calgary’s new-home construction industry. Experience completing construction measurements or material takeoffs. Construction-grade stair manufacturing experience is a strong asset. Carpentry, framing, millwork, cabinetry or residential construction experience is an asset. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Good computer and administrative skills. Strong organizational and time-management abilities. Confidence working with fractions, measurements, elevations and construction terminology. Ability to work independently while staying connected to the larger team. Valid Alberta driver’s licence and the ability to travel to Calgary-area job sites. Comfortable working safely in active construction and production environments. You do not need to know everything about stairs on your first day. We can teach you our stair systems and processes. You do need to bring curiosity, accuracy, accountability and a willingness to learn.
