About the job

During this one-year internship, you will:

  • assist with the provision of analytical support of forest estate models and other quantitative resource modeling and analysis tools to regional and district staff under the general guidance of the unit supervisor and the professional direction of regional staff
  • assist in assembling, manipulating and synthesizing resource management data for use in forest modelling and analyses processes and tools
  • conducting components of forest modelling and analyses, including assessments of impacts from planned activities on forests (e.g. ecosystem, wood supply, socio-economic); and determination of allowable harvest levels in support of the development of forest management plans
  • automating forest modelling and analysis data management processes through scripting for efficiency, repeatability, and reusability
  • providing support on questions of natural resources sustainability by applying knowledge of legislation, theory, principles and practices of forest management planning

What you bring to the team

Eligibility:

  • You have proof of eligibility to work in Canada.
  • You have graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma in the last four years.
  • You are not a permanent employee of the OPS.
  • All candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNR 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNR internship program in the past.

Knowledge:

  • knowledge of quantitative forestry and natural resource analysis modelling techniques, tools, approaches, and processes
  • general understanding of the legislation, theory, principles and practices of forest management planning in Ontario
  • demonstrated knowledge of spreadsheets, database software, programming languages (e.g. Python, SQL) and GIS software to assimilate diverse information from both geospatial and non-geospatial data sources and conduct resource modelling and analyses
  • knowledge of best practices and principles associated with managing systems, data and information to organize and manage large and/or diverse datasets in accordance with information management policies and standards
  • knowledge of computer applications to produce technical written documents and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the OH&S Act that apply to the workplace and the work being performed

Skills:

  • computer and querying skills associated with database management systems (e.g. SQL) to manipulate data, analyze and develop solutions to complex resource management problems, familiarity with common word processing and spreadsheet packages, graphics package and office automation systems
  • research, analytical and interpretative skills to perform quantitative and statistical analyses on geospatial and tabular data sets of varying complexity and assimilate diverse information to support forest modelling and analyses
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills to undertake routine and non-routine spatial analyses to support resource management planning
  • interpersonal, organizational and prioritization skills, initiative, good judgement, tact and diplomacy, including ability to carry out work assignments with minimal supervision and work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team environment and with external client groups
  • communication skills to produce technical documents and present information to multi-disciplinary planning teams
