The City of Port Moody has an exciting new opportunity for a regular, full-time Arborist to join our Urban Forestry team.
The Arborist will perform skilled and technical work largely related to administration of the City’s Tree Protection Bylaw. Work will include: reviewing tree permit applications, participating in bylaw enforcement and compliance, reviewing development applications and tree protection measures for construction. This position will also be responsible for growing the City’s urban forest by ensuring replacement trees are planted and protected. This position offers a mix of field and office work, with opportunities for remote work where applicable.
Responsibilities:

Reviews tree removal permit applications and provides technical arboriculture input and conducts on-site field reviews
-
Reviews arborist reports, tree risk assessments and related documentation, proposed site and landscape plans for development related permits to ensure compliance with the Tree Protection Bylaw

Provides recommendations on the proposed site and landscape plans to enhance tree protection, retention and compliance with the Tree Protection Bylaw
-
Monitors the status of development sites for compliance with the Tree Protection Bylaw and follows up with applicants when necessary
-
Responds to incidents of Tree Protection Bylaw non-compliance, conducting on-site field reviews and inspections, investigating unauthorized tree removals and damage, issuing stop work orders and notices, meeting with developers, contractors, applicants and property owners, and preparing enforcement reports, including support for legal or regulatory actions when required.

Liaises with other City departments and staff, including but not limited to, planning, engineering, and parks, to ensure consistent approaches to tree protection and urban forest management

Engages and responds to inquiries and issues related to the Tree Protection Bylaw and the City’s urban forest policies, procedures and strategies, including the Urban Forest Strategy.

Provides information and assistance to staff and the public on Urban Forest Strategy and Tree Protection Bylaw related matters.

Other arboriculture and urban forestry related duties/responsibilities as assigned, i.e., public tree inspections, inventory and mapping, community outreach, etc.
Basic Qualifications:

Completion of a diploma program in arboriculture or horticulture (supplemented by courses in arboriculture) or related Journeyman Ticket
-
In-depth knowledge of arboricultural and urban forestry principles, practices, and techniques, including tree risk assessment, tree species identification, tree biology, pest and disease management, and treatment methods.

Minimum three years of job-related experience in arboricultural and urban forestry work, including experience in hazard tree assessment.
-
Knowledge of methods, practices, materials, tools, equipment, and safety precaution in arboricultural work. Strong arboriculture field skills are an asset.

Familiarity with municipal development and subdivision approval processes, particularly as they relate to tree protection and urban forestry (preferred).

Ability to read and interpret scaled technical and CAD drawings such as landscape, architectural, and civil plans (preferred).

Understanding of the City’s Tree Protection Bylaw and related regulations (preferred).

Exceptional interpersonal and public relations skills to effectively communicate with residents, applicants, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.

Proficiency in computer applications and standard office software for report writing, data entry, and communication.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Valid BC driver’s license (Class 5 unrestricted)
