Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking an Academic Advisor for a full-time continuing opportunity with the School of Business.
You will work with students to help them understand the various pathways forward to a degree, diploma or certificate; assist and support students as they make choices which impact their future; discuss career plans and support students experiencing academic difficulty.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide students with information and resources to promote academic progress;
- Provide educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses and determining appropriate education solutions for different types of students;
- Monitor student progress and discuss concerns, including intervention during the current semester, while ensuring student retention through consistent follow-ups;
- Stay informed of current and changing rules, regulations and program requirements;
- Maintain student files and records, while ensuring courses entered into Peoplesoft are accurate according to the student's educational plan.
- Interpret and apply MacEwan academic policies and procedures;
- Assist in recruitment of potential/prospective students by advising them of general academic requirements; describe courses; disseminate information regarding registration procedures; and
- Participate in student orientation sessions. Assist students with admission and registration and provide guidance in course selection in keeping with the student's interests, values and abilities.
SKILLS
You will have:
- The ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing;
- The ability to learn and use a variety of simple to complex computer applications;
- The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships;
- The ability to work independently;
- The ability to remain calm and focused in stressful situations;
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task;
- Strong presentation skills; and
- Strong problem solving skills
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree
- A minimum of two years’ experience in a post-secondary institution working with students.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
