Our client is a venture-backed technology company building infrastructure for the future of global work. With strong investor backing and a rapidly expanding customer base, the company has achieved meaningful traction and is scaling its platform to help organizations operate and grow globally.

As the company continues its expansion, they are seeking a VP, Legal to join their Toronto-based team. Reporting to the CEO, this role offers the opportunity to build and lead the legal function while partnering closely with leadership to support the company’s continued growth and global expansion. You will work cross-functionally with teams across product, engineering, payments, and operations to translate complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical, scalable solutions that support a rapidly growing technology platform.

This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially minded lawyer who enjoys building, solving complex global challenges, and operating in an environment where legal is a strategic partner to the business.

Your role will include:

  • Leading the company’s legal function and advising senior leadership on legal, regulatory, and risk matters while supporting scalable global growth.
  • Designing and maintaining compliant employment agreements and workforce structures across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Drafting and negotiating customer, vendor, and strategic partnership agreements that support the company’s business objectives.
  • Managing relationships with external counsel globally to ensure compliance with local employment, corporate, and regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting corporate structuring, governance, financing activities, fundraising, and potential M&A
  • Advising on regulatory considerations and legal risks as the company expands into new jurisdictions.
  • Cross-Functional Partnering with product, engineering, and payments teams to translate legal frameworks into scalable product capabilities and compliant operational processes.
  • Overseeing regulatory initiatives, including compliance obligations associated with operating a global platform.
  • Developing legal processes, templates, and playbooks to support the company’s continued growth.

You are the ideal candidate if you have/are:

  • J.D. and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • 7-10+ years of legal experience, with experience at a technology company or advising technology companies (more experience welcome!)
  • Experience in corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters
  • Experience working in or advising high-growth companies or venture-backed/start-up environments.
  • Strong business judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical, business-focused solutions.
  • Experience in international employment law and global workforce compliance an asset
  • A pragmatic and solutions-oriented mindset when navigating complex regulatory and operational challenges.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across legal, product, engineering, finance, and operations teams.
  • The ability to operate independently, take initiative and thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
