Desired Results of the Position:

  • Supports the Algonquin Students’ Association (SA) with internal and external communications on all platforms.

  • Strategic storytelling that fosters a student’s connection to the SA.

Nature and Scope

Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Communications Officer will work closely with all areas of the Students’ Association to provide comprehensive communications support. This role involves the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of strategic communication plans that align with the SA’s annual priorities and planning cycle. The Communications Officer will establish and maintain harmonious and productive relationships with SA staff, College staff, students, alumni, and guests. They will ensure that all communications reflect the SA’s mission and values, contributing to a cohesive and positive organizational culture.

Job Duties

  • Provide communication support to the SA, including writing and editing speeches, video scripts, media responses, letters, memos, announcements, web copy, and presentations.

  • Build strong relationships with the SA and College community, fostering open communication and collaboration.

  • Assist in developing, implementing, and measuring internal and external communication plans that align with organizational goals.

  • Maintain the SA’s voice and tone in all communications, ensuring consistency and authenticity.

  • Plan, create, and send out email campaigns to staff and other key stakeholders.

  • Proactively pitch creative ideas to tell the SA’s story across various platforms.

  • Create storyboards and detailed plans for video and social content, ensuring alignment with the SA’s messaging and goals.

  • Assist with social media planning, including organic content and ad creation and copywriting, to enhance the SA’s online presence.

  • Contribute to the production of monthly newsletters, ensuring engaging and relevant content.

  • Collaborate with the Manager, Communications, and Senior Manager, Communications, to draft and issue timely SA announcements, develop comprehensive communication plans, and develop content related to the SA’s strategic and crisis communications goals.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

  • At least one year of professional experience in communications.

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with a high degree of accuracy in information.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and to work effectively at all organizational levels.

  • Experience with WordPress and social media video editing is highly desirable.

Compensation:

  • Contract term (five months with potential for extension): February 1, 2025 – June 30th, 2025 (approximately; depends on start date)

  • Salary: $29.15 per hour

  • Up to 25 hours per work week

  • Requires some evening and weekend work and in-person work duties at all campuses and facilities.

  • 4% vacation pay per pay period
