Head of Software Engineering

About Us

Local Energy is reimagining how industrial systems and communities plan, share, and consume energy. Decarbonization isn’t just our goal — it’s our core mission. Through AI-powered simulation and optimization tools, we enable the design of smart local grids and unlock dynamic energy markets. Our platform helps reduce emissions, drive efficiency, and create shared economic value, all while building more sustainable, resilient energy systems.

We are supported in part by Mila , a world-leading AI research institute, to build innovative solutions for the climate crisis focused on industrial local energy networks. We’re early-stage, funded, and growing fast — and now we’re building out our engineering team from the ground up.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced full-stack Software Engineer to join as an early hire on the engineering team. You’ll work closely with the Head of Software Engineering (that’s me) to build the core infrastructure and applications that power our energy optimization platform. This is a high-impact, high-ownership role: ideal for a product-minded generalist who wants to ship real things fast, wear multiple hats, and grow into a technical leadership role as the team scales.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and ship core features across the full stack: frontend, backend, and everything in between
  • Work closely with Product and AI teams to bring ideas to life quickly and iteratively
  • Help establish our engineering standards, architecture, and development processes from scratch
  • Make thoughtful tradeoffs between speed and scalability — shipping MVPs without creating messes
  • Contribute to building a strong, values-aligned engineering culture as our team grows
  • Lay the groundwork for future technical leadership, through mentorship, decision-making, and ownership

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 5-7 years of professional software development experience

, with a track record of building real products end-to-end

  • Full-stack proficiency

, ideally with a modern frontend framework (e.g. React or similar) and backend experience in TypeScript/Node.js, Python, or similar languages

  • You’re a T-shaped

engineer: broad experience in software development, but deep knowledge in one of our core focus areas (backend architecture, AI, data engineering)

  • Strong product sense, a natural collaborator with non-engineers, with a bias for action and learning — you ship, reflect, improve, and repeat

  • Comfortable working in high-ambiguity, low-structure

    environments typical of early-stage startups

  • Experience or familiarity with AI coding tools like Github Copilot, Cursor, etc. that help you escape the tedium and focus on what matters

  • Aspiration to lead and mentor others

as the team grows, even if you’re not there yet

  • And most of all, you’re energized by our mission and want to have a real impact on clean energy systems

Nice to Have

  • Experience working at early-stage startups
  • Prior exposure to energy systems, industrial IoT, or applied machine learning
  • Experience with Python, preferably in a data engineering or ML context
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and orchestration, Kubernetes, Terraform
  • Contributions to open-source or personal side projects that demonstrate your passion for software development
  • Bilingual (French / English)

Why Join Us

  • Work directly with a founding team of experienced operators, engineers, and researchers
  • Competitive compensation and early equity via stock options in a high-upside, mission-driven company
  • Remote-friendly, flexible work culture built on trust and autonomy
  • Group insurance policy, with premiums covered in full - including comprehensive health, dental, life and long-term disability coverage
  • Unlimited vacation – take time off when you need it so you can be at your best
  • Brand-new MacBook Pro dev machine
  • Access to a comfortable office space at Mila near Montreal’s Little Italy neighbourhood; surrounded by startup energy and top AI talent
