The position of Dietetic Services Consultant is responsible for conducting comprehensive dietary inspections, support, monitoring and follow up to ensure resident nutritional care and food service compliance as per the Community Care Facilities (CCF) and Nursing Home (NH) Act, Regulations, Operational and Care Service Standards for Private NHs and CCFs. This position is also responsible for supporting facility staff regarding compliance with the Act, Regulations and Standards as well as investigating complaints related to food services or nutritional care. Dietary inspection findings are a component of the licensing decisions for CCFs and NHs. This is a highly autonomous position in which the incumbent is most often working alone and requires in province travel to 36 Community Care Facilities and 11 private Nursing Homes across Prince Edward Island.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Conduct inspections of Private Nursing Homes and Community Care Facilities at least annually and more frequent if required;
- Interpret Community Care and Nursing Home Regulations/Standards related to food service and nutritional care, identifying regulations/standards that are not being meet and providing guidance to improve services.
- Document findings and submit reports to Community Care Facilities and Private Nursing Homes Licensing Board;
- Conduct follow-up visits to ensure recommendations and corrective actions have occurred;
- Provide guidance and consultation to operators and/or staff in identification of residents' nutritional needs and planning of appropriate nutritional support;
- Receive and triage complaints and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Conduct inspection interviews with residents, families, dietary staff and management of the facility and reviews of resident records.
- Attend relevant meetings and provides input to other health system staff regarding special initiatives related to dietary and nutritional services in long term care including trends, quality and risk.
- Assist in identifying training priorities for facility staff in relation to specific dietary trends, findings in inspections, complaints and events.
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- University degree with a major in Nutrition or Dietetics and completion of a Dietetic Internship Program.
- Registration with the College of Dieticians of Prince Edward Island.
- Proficient use of computers with Microsoft office software.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
- Broad knowledge of health and community services system in PEI.
- Excellent organizational skills, strong team-building and collaborative skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing communication skills.
- A good work and attendance record.
- The successful candidate must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check prior to commencing employment.
- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
Other Qualifications:
- Experience in Adult education and working in Long-Term care would be considered an asset.
- Experience with menu planning and nutrient analysis would be considered an asset.
- Ability to interpret and apply regulations would be considered an asset.
- Familiarity with compliance monitoring, corrective action plans and follow-up procedures would be considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Canada’s Food Guide for Older Adults and LTC/CC standards would be considered an asset.
