POSITION OVERVIEW

The Globe is seeking a deputy editor to help lead its personal finance and investing team. The deputy editor is a management position who will work with our team of reporters, columnists and market strategists to guide the continued expansion of our financial coverage. This individual will be responsible for finding new ways to expand the appeal of our reporting with a broad range of readers. Our readers regularly turn to The Globe for advice on how to properly prepare for financial futures. Our goal is to provide long-term financial planning guidance for all readers, regardless of age or financial circumstance. This is an opportunity to help define The Globe’s coverage in topics that are key drivers of subscriptions and retention. The deputy editor will work with the Managing Editor of Globe Investor to expand our financial coverage, working with both freelancers and staff reporters.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Find and manage new columnists Assign staff writers on investing and personal finance topics Manage staff performance, motivate reporters to achieve their best and encourage creativity and innovation Collaborate with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to develop new tools, features, explainers and interactives to aid readers in their financial planning Use audience data to inform coverage and topic areas QUALIFICATIONS: At least five years previous editing and assigning experience Experience cultivating new writers with an eye to diversifying our contributors Ability to think beyond standard storytelling formats and assist in developing new tools and interactives Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio Avid news consumer with previous experience working in business journalism Previous managing or supervisory experience is an asset. This position is based in the Toronto office and requires a minimum of three days a week in office.

SALARY: The base salary for this role ranges from $120,000 to $140,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate’s level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role’s requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role’s requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe’s Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
