Your role
Reporting to the Executive Director, Unscripted Content, your role involves the daily management of all issues contributing to the creative excellence of the Network’s prime-time, premier factual and documentary content. This includes both digital and television programming, with a view to fulfilling the corporation’s mandate while improving audience share.
As the Executive in Charge of Production, Unscripted, you will have a direct impact on programming content. You will evaluate, recommend, and execute new program opportunities, develop projects, manage ongoing programs, and oversee the promotion and publicity of those programs in the schedule. In keeping with the mission of CBC, you will evolve the organization’s content strategy across all platforms by sharing stories that matter to Canadians , focusing on delivering content that reflects the diversity of voices in our country. Personally, and through coalition building, you will expand the range of content brought to the audience as well as the diversity of talent on both sides of the camera.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Assessment & Development: Collaborates with the Development team to manage and respond to pitches from the independent production community; evaluates and recommends new program opportunities and formats.
- Production Oversight: Liaises with external producers to evaluate ongoing productions, manage projects from pre-production through post-production (including accepting deliverables), and ensure creative directions are consistent with network expectations.
- Quality & Standards: Strengthens program quality and ensures content adheres to corporate standards, policies, and Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP) when required.
- Strategic Problem Solving: Evaluates and offers resolutions to complex problems utilizing in-depth analysis and production experience.
- Financial Management: Authorizes payments upon receipt and acceptance of creative materials per governing contracts and drawdown schedules; monitors production progress against schedules to ensure timely delivery.
- Promotion & Publicity: Advises on the general approach for program promotion; coordinates marketing, star appearances, and on-air promotions with independent producers, Communications, Talent Relations, and Presentation staff.
- Industry Representation: Participates in committee meetings, festivals, and workshops; represents the corporation on juries and panels; and seminars.
- Market Intelligence: Keeps abreast of relevant competing programming, Canadian talent, and evolving issues in culture, broadcasting, and current affairs.
You possess the following:
- Education & Experience: University degree or equivalent; 10+ years of related experience in programming, production, and financial management, including 3+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Cultural Competence: Strong cultural fluency to ensure authentic representation in BIPOC storytelling
- Editorial Expertise: Strong production and editorial skills for television and digital; proven storytelling, structuring, and vetting skills; and familiarity with Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).
- Industry Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of the independent production community and premier factual/documentary programming worldwide; sound understanding of CBC’s role as a national public broadcaster.
- Business Acumen: Strong understanding of production, business, and marketing; knowledge of CRTC/CMF guidelines, broadcast licenses, and funding issues (e.g., tax credits) across Canada.
- Contractual Skills: Proven experience in developing national and international licensing agreements and commissioning successful programs.
- Strategic Engagement: Understanding of how content works on different platforms and experience engaging audiences beyond traditional broadcast.
- Leadership & Collaboration: Strong leadership, staff management, and negotiation skills; ability to function collaboratively in a highly competitive environment.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Bilingualism (English/French) is a strong asset.
- Operational Requirements: Requires a flexible schedule to accommodate production demands; some travel required.
