Position Overview: We are seeking a Senior HVDC Automation & Controls Engineer to join our Station Design Department. Under the consultative direction of the Principal HVDC Automation & Controls Engineer, provide corporate guidance and direction on HVDC standards & technology, and act as senior specialist and consultant in executing and leading capital work in HVDC Station control, protection, automation, auxiliary and synchronous condenser systems. Responsible to supervise and provide engineering leadership to a team of highly skilled technical staff producing quality engineering deliverables at a high volume.

Responsibilities: Act as senior HVDC specialist related to design in HVDC converter stations. Provide corporate level expertise and consulting services in the field of HVDC systems to the Asset Planning and Delivery and Operations Business Units. Provide technical leadership and consulting services for major HVDC capital projects and strategic sustainment initiatives including HVDC concept and detailed design, procurement, and managing internal and consulting and contracting personnel as required. Plan, lead and manage a highly skilled work team including internal and external consultants producing design deliverables that maintain accountability to meet committed schedules and estimates. Establish clear statements for staff on the scope, schedules, priorities, and deliverables for each project/assignment. Coordinate work team efforts to ensure consistency, efficiency, and achievement of committed deliverables. Provide direct support in the procurement of major HVDC apparatus and control & protection equipment, including the evaluation of emerging technologies, and influence of technical requirements and specifications. Provide construction support, acceptance testing, system testing, commissioning, energization and post-energization of HVDC plant. Supply post-energization support as required to ensure correct system operation. Consult and coordinate with internal project managers, contract management specialists, construction, commissioning, and other project stakeholders throughout the corporation, as well as external consultants on project activities to ensure that all share a common understanding of project requirements and deliverables. Working with the Principal HVDC Automation & Control Engineer, influence, implement and continually improve concepts and standards related to HVDC controls, plus the adherence to existing standards, practices and procedures, to ensure they meet the required performance objectives. Represent Manitoba Hydro as a senior technical authority in external Technical Societies and Standards Organizations related to HVDC systems. Provide recommendations to department and business unit leadership on HVDC technology strategy, investment priorities, and requirements to ensure long-term system performance. Lead, provide strategic direction, functional leadership, direct and mentor the development of technical staff as required.

Qualifications: Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of nine years directly related experience including a minimum of three years of supervisory experience directing engineers, technical staff and engineering consultants. Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time). Advanced knowledge of HVDC technology and HVDC controls including both modern digital systems such as used in Bipole 3, as well as analog electronic HVDC controls and equipment as used in Bipoles 1 & 2. Advanced knowledge of the control and protection of synchronous condensers. Demonstrated HVDC design experience including protection, control, metering, interlocking, control building and associated electrical design, panel layout and associated wiring and cabling design practices. Experience with all types of HVDC substation apparatus and equipment up to 500 kV, including their operating characteristics and protection and control requirements. A broad understanding of the roles and challenges in various design and related areas internal and external to the department such as Planning, Construction, Commissioning, Operating, and Maintenance. Demonstrated ability to provide mature leadership in planning, organizing and directing the activities of a group of highly skilled engineers, technical officers, technicians and engineering consultants. Demonstrated ability to motivate others and a high degree of initiative. Demonstrated ability to communicate tactfully in all circumstances with internal stakeholders & external consultants, negotiate successfully under potentially difficult situations and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with others at all levels of both internal and external organizations. Demonstrated ability to work effectively on inter-departmental committees, project teams and task forces. Possess and maintain a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Salary Range Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $57.62-$78.94 Hourly, $110,417.06-$151,272.42 Annually.
