Reporting to the Supervising Engineer, Central Distribution Engineering, this position is responsible for engineering, authentication and validation of overhead and underground designs, along with operational planning. This area of responsibility will require technical skills in civil structure design, electrical design and electrical operational planning.
Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and mentoring of TRTs, EITs, and Expeditors in complex distribution design and operational planning. This includes authentication, peer reviews and technical support.
- Authentication and validation of professional work products for distribution design. Ensure best practices and principles in our professional practice management plan (PPMP) are being followed.
- Oversee projects assigned to Engineering Contractors as Owner Engineer to ensure successful project execution.
- Provide engineering support to the regional team including PLTs and Construction leads. Identify issues and propose solutions that meet our construction manual and code requirements.
- Be familiar with our Distribution Construction Standard Manual DCSM, CSA and AEUC codes and regulations.
- Project estimating for complex projects including determining routing and estimating, participating in field checks, determining most efficient routing, identifying material requirements, applying pricing, schedules, and commercial terms for customer proposals.
- Project design of overhead and underground distribution facilities including application of company standard structures, structure loading analysis, and determining pole class and guy length requirements, clearance calculations of overhead facilities
- Sizing electrical equipment, wire, and cable, sizing of appropriate over current protective devices, voltage drop calculations.
- Providing support to all groups in the organization on the roles and responsibilities of the Large Distribution project process.
- Project Management from initiation until the project is released to construction. Update project management tool (APS – ATCO Project Server) in a timely fashion.
- Build schedules for projects and identify changes to projects and associate risks with those changes. Mitigate risks where possible.
- Managing and owning the relationship with the customer from the time the project is raised, until it is released to construction.
- Identify ways to meet and exceed customer experience expectations, improve service delivery and reduce costs.
- Lead process improvement teams to make changes to our systems, standards and best practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Electrical or Civil preferred).
- Professional Engineer registered or eligible for registration with APEGA.
- A minimum of five (5) years of related experience as a Professional Engineer, preferably within an electrical utility environment.
- Strong technical skills in civil structure and electrical design.
- Previous experience working with medium voltage systems is an asset.
- Previous experience working with ATCO’s Distribution Construction Standards Manual is an asset.
- Previous experience with PLS-CADD or other powerline modelling software is an asset.
- Superior interpersonal and organizational skills in addition to strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A valid Alberta driver’s license (Class 5).
