About the role
Job Details
Description The Applications Engineer supports the commercial design and quoting process for In-Core Instrumentation (ICI), probes, and sensors used in nuclear reactors. These instruments are critical for monitoring and controlling reactor core conditions—neutron flux, temperature, and pressure—to ensure safe and efficient operation.
This role bridges the gap between engineering and commercial teams, providing technical expertise during the exploratory design phase to ensure proposed solutions align with both customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities. The Applications Engineer partners closely with the commercial organization to support major nuclear utilities as well as emerging SMR (Small Modular Reactor) operators, delivering technically sound, cost-effective solutions tailored to each reactor’s needs.
Core Duties/Responsibilities
-
Technical Sales Support:
-
Partner with the commercial team to develop technically sound proposals and quotations, ensuring alignment with both customer requirements and internal manufacturing capabilities.
-
Customer Engagement:
-
Act as a primary technical interface for customers—participating in design reviews, clarifying specifications, and guiding exploratory design discussions for ICIs, neutron detectors, and related sensor systems.
-
Design Translation:
-
Review reactor core layouts, sensor placement requirements, and interface specifications to generate conceptual designs, BOMs, and configuration options supporting bid packages.
-
Engineering Collaboration:
-
Work closely with design engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure proposed solutions are feasible, cost-effective, and compliant with nuclear safety and regulatory standards.
-
Proposal Documentation:
-
Prepare technical content for quotes and proposals, including datasheets, preliminary drawings, performance summaries, and design assumptions.
-
Voice of Customer:
-
Capture field and customer insights to inform design improvements, product standardization, and new development initiatives.
-
Engineering Collaboration:
-
Work closely with design engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure proposed solutions are feasible, cost-effective, and compliant with nuclear safety and regulatory standards.
-
SMR & Advanced Reactor Engagement:
-
Support early-stage discussions with next-generation nuclear developers (SMRs, microreactors) to adapt product offerings to new designs and reactor geometries.
Responsibilities – Safety & Quality
- All employees are expected to follow government and corporate laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- All Cambridge employees play a role in the implementation of the site Quality and Safety Policy, which outlines a safe work environment as the foundation for the business unit’s goal to create a positive customer experience.

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering (or related field). Master’s degree preferred.
-
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
-
EXPERIENCE
-
Minimum 5+ years of engineering experience in the nuclear industry, ideally in core instrumentation, neutron flux sensors, or radiation detection systems.
-
Prior exposure to in-core instrumentation or reactor physics applications strongly preferred.
-
Experience supporting customer proposals, design reviews, or bid development within a regulated technical environment.
-
PHYSICAL
-
Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk 2-4 hours at a time.
-
Required ability to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone.
-
Frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms.
-
Verbal and listening skills required.
-
Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
-
Work will be performed in the office and various production site work environments.
Other Requirements
