Home Campus: Fennell (hybrid work arrangements available)

Rate of Pay: Payband H (Starting Rate: $36.29 per hour)

Under the direction of the General Manager, the Software Designer’s main mandate is to provide applied research support focusing on technical tasks for the proper completion of internal and industry-related projects at the Energy and Power Innovation Centre. The incumbent will serve as technical support and interact with internal/external clients, students, and Faculty-members to conduct and support project tasks.

The incumbent will serve as a key technical resource proficient in different subjects including but not limited to software development focusing on back-end applications including cloud development. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible to support the design and implement project-related database structures and associated API operations. The role requires working closely with industry, faculty members and students to perform project tasks and provide high quality/on-time deliverables for internal and external projects. The role also requires mentorship of junior students; whose active participation in real life projects is a core activity of the Centre.

This position will act as a hands-on resource supporting the Centre projects, as well as provide support and input into dissemination activities to showcase the Centre and project results.

What you’ll be doing

Technical support for EPIC’s applied research projects, having working knowledge of the following:

  • Design and Develop Cloud Infrastructure: Build cloud solutions using AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, EC2, S3). Help architect and implement infrastructure as code using AWS CDK and Terraform as well as JavaScript/TypeScript and Python.
  • Database Management and Data Storage: Create and manage both relational (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB) tailored to meet application and performance requirements. Design data schemas to support efficient querying and storage.
  • ETL and Data Processing Pipelines: Implement ETL workflows for data ingestion, cleaning, and storage, handling data from diverse formats (CSV, PDF, XLSX, MQTT streams, APIs). Ensure the reliability of data pipelines for real-time and batch data.
  • Data Acquisition and Parsing: Acquire and parse data from multiple sources and formats, enabling smooth integration into database structures or cloud storage. Implement parsing logic to transform raw data into actionable insights.
  • Integration with Data Visualization Tools: Connect to and display data using third-party tools (Tableau, Google Looker) and custom-built dashboards. Enable basic data analysis within applications to provide users with insight into their data.
  • Programming and Scripting: Develop and maintain Python scripts and JavaScript/TypeScript code for backend logic, data handling, and automation tasks. Write clean, efficient code in JavaScript/TypeScript for both front-end and back-end needs.

Key technical contact with internal and external stakeholders:

  • Work with students, staff, faculty and clients to ensure project deliverables are met within the planned timeframe and expected quality.
  • Support and train co-op and capstone students directly involved in Centre projects.
  • Mentor students participating in industrial applied research and internal projects.
  • Support senior staff in internal/external technical meetings.

Cloud infrastructure structure maintenance and best-practices implementation:

  • Permission grant procedure.
  • Guard rails for maintaining and aligning with budgeted cloud costs.
  • Document/code version control.
  • Keep up to date with related 3rd party software upgrades and their impact on existing applications.

Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A minimum of three-year post-secondary education in Electrical or Computer Engineering Program.
  • Programming Languages: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, HTML, CSS.
  • Web and Cloud Development: Full stack development expertise.
  • Cloud Platforms: AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, EC2, S3).
  • Infrastructure as Code: AWS CDK, Terraform.
  • Database Technologies: NoSQL (DynamoDB, MongoDB), Relational (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Data Processing and ETL: Experience with data cleaning, ingestion, and storage workflows.
  • Data Formats: Experience handling CSV, PDF, XLSX, MQTT, and APIs for data acquisition and parsing.
  • Data Visualization: Integration with Tableau, Google Looker, or custom front-end displays for data analytics.
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant experience considered when directly related to the focus areas of the Centre.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
