About the role
THE ROLE
The Project Accountant is responsible for the financial oversight, tracking, and reporting of construction and infrastructure projects from project setup through close-out. This role supports project managers and leadership by ensuring accurate cost tracking, forecasting, billing, and compliance with internal controls and contractual requirements across multiple active projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Financial Management
- Set up and maintain project cost structures, budgets, and cost codes in the accounting system.
- Monitor project costs, commitments, and expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets.
- Track labour, equipment, materials, subcontractor, and overhead costs by project.
- Prepare and maintain accurate project forecasts, including cost-to-complete and variance analysis.
Billing & Revenue Recognition
- Prepare monthly progress billings, including percent-complete calculations and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with internal teams to validate billable work and resolve billing discrepancies.
- Ensure revenue recognition aligns with contract terms and applicable accounting standards.
- Support change order tracking, pricing, and financial impacts.
Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly project financial reports for Project Managers and senior leadership.
- Analyze variances between budget, forecast, and actuals; provide clear explanations and recommendations.
- Support internal and external audits by providing project-level financial documentation.
Controls & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to company financial policies, internal controls, and approval authorities.
- Support compliance with contractual, regulatory, and client reporting requirements.
- Assist in maintaining accurate records for multi-provincial projects.
Collaboration & Support
- Provide financial guidance to project teams to support informed decision-making.
- Assist with project close-out activities, including final billings and margin review.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3–5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction, utilities, energy, or infrastructure projects.
- Experience with project-based accounting and job-costing environments.
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and project forecasting.
- Proficiency with accounting and ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, JD Edwards, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, financial models).
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills with both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Proactive, organized, and solutions-focused.
