Reporting to the Instrumentation and Control Engineering Lead, you will support engineering activities aimed at improving the performance, reliability, and maintainability of the Horizon Oil Sands Upgrader. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will assist with troubleshooting and implementing instrumentation, valve, and control system solutions across all Horizon business units. The successful candidate will contribute to project scoping, support detailed design activities, and participate in commissioning and operational activities for small capital and reliability‑driven projects.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide technical support to Operations and Maintenance by assisting with troubleshooting of instrumentation, control valves, actuated on‑off valves, control systems, and low‑voltage electrical equipment.
  • Support Operations and Maintenance during routine operations, outages, and turnarounds by diagnosing issues, gathering field data, and implementing engineering recommendations.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings with Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations to ensure alignment on plant issues, project scope, and technical decisions.
  • Develop scopes of work and cost estimates for the installation, upgrade, or repair of instrumentation and automated valves.
  • Develop instrumentation engineering deliverables, including datasheets, material requisitions, installation details, wiring and loop diagrams, control narratives, and instrument location plans, as required.
  • Participate in field activities during construction and commissioning for daily operations and Turnarounds.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Six Sigma and 4DX methodologies to enhance production and reliability across the Horizon site.

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Upcoming 2026 graduate from a Bachelor's of Electrical, Mechanical or related Engineering Program. Recent new graduates from 2025 will also be considered.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA as a Member In Training immediately upon graduation.
  • Prior co-op or internship experience in instrumentation, controls, or industrial operations is an asset.
  • Active participation in engineering design teams or engineering societies/extracurriculars is a strong asset.
  • Basic understanding of refinery or upgrading processes such as fractional distillation, delayed coking, hydrotreating, amine treating, sulphur recovery, and on-site utility systems (steam, air, water, power).
  • Foundational knowledge of process-measurement principles and common instrumentation technologies. Familiarity with pressure relief devices, control valves, or actuation systems is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent with a reasonably clean driver’s abstract.
