Opportunity
The Financial and Administrative Services team within the Public Service Commission is seeking an innovative and highly motivated individual with accounting, problem solving, analytical and interpersonal skills for the position of Financial Assistant. This position reports directly to the Manager of Finance and Administration and will play a role in supporting the branch’s financial operations and administrative functions.
Your primary responsibilities will include (but not limited to):
- auditing invoices, purchase card expenditures, and other requests for payment; ensuring compliance with applicable legislative authorities, agreements, contracts, etc.; identifying accounting errors and preparing adjustments;
- providing advice, guidance, and training to employees with respect to government/ministry policy and procedures; responding to inquiries from clients, branches and other ministries;
- creating, maintaining, and reconciling financial and statistical reports;
- processing cheques and cash received, verifying and allocating to accounts, preparing deposit information and making bank deposits; preparing journal entries to update MIDAS; preparing and entering debit memos in MIDAS to record refunds to vote; etc.;
- assisting in month-end and year-end processes, and forecasting and budgeting;
- working with computer software applications, spreadsheets, databases and financial systems in order to balance financial data; and,
- contributing to the development and maintenance of internal operating procedures as required.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced finance and administration professional who:
- independent and confident in order to organize, prioritize and proficiently complete multiple tasks while dealing with frequent interruptions and tight deadlines;
- adaptable, flexible and resilient in order to meet new challenges as they arise;
- approachable and collaborative in order to build strong working relationships;
- an exceptional communicator both verbally and in writing;
- thorough and accurate to ensure quality work;
- innovative problem solver that identifies and makes process improvement recommendations; and,
- tactful and discreet when working with confidential and sensitive information.
Typically, the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be obtained through the completion of a diploma in accounting or a combination of education and related experience. Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, Adobe Professional, Oracle Financials (MIDAS), and knowledge of the Government of Saskatchewan’s Financial Administration Manual (FAM) and Purchase Card Program would be considered an asset.
