Job Description

The Managing Director, Compliance will lead enterprise compliance activities across the organization, within the Compliance group. This role has direct responsibility for a small team and will oversee the design and execution of compliance programs, maintain a forward-looking view of global regulatory priorities, and ensure the organization remains ahead of evolving regulatory requirements and expectations. The position reports to the Managing Director, Head of Compliance and is based in Toronto.

Accountabilities**:**

  • Lead enterprise compliance activities, including but not limited to:

    • Personal trading
    • Gifts and entertainment
    • Conflicts of interest
    • Compliance management system oversight
  • Design, implement, and maintain compliance policies and procedures aligned with global best practices.

  • Monitor regulatory developments globally and proactively assess implications for CPP Investments’ operations and strategy.

  • Drive regulatory change management across the organization, including policy updates, training, and awareness programs.

  • Partner with senior leadership to provide strategic compliance advice and influence organizational decision-making.

  • Ensure compliance considerations are effectively integrated into enterprise strategy, investment decisions, and risk management frameworks.

  • Leverage technology, data, and analytics to enhance monitoring, reporting, and risk identification.

  • Develop and mentor a team of compliance professionals to ensure strong execution, accountability, and culture of compliance while fostering an enterprise-wide culture of integrity, inclusion and high performance

  • Work with Legal Advisory and Investment teams to implement and embed the enterprise compliance framework across business activities, ensuring consistent application of policies, effective oversight, and alignment with regulatory expectations and organizational objectives.

Qualifications

  • A law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) and admission to the bar in a Canadian province.

  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience, including significant direct experience working with regulators.

  • Proven litigation experience, ideally involving complex, regulatory, or enterprise compliance matters.

  • Deep expertise in financial services compliance, preferably within asset management, pension, or banking sector.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and leading enterprise compliance programs.

  • Strong understanding of global regulatory environments; international regulatory experience considered a strong asset.

  • Proven ability to influence senior leadership on compliance risks and strategy and contribute to enterprise-wide strategic decisions.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills with a track record of building high-performing teams.

  • Strategic thinker with ability to anticipate regulatory trends and position the organization accordingly.

  • Skilled at managing complex regulatory interactions and maintaining constructive regulator relationships.

  • Strong drafting, policy development, and training skills.

  • High integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to CPP Investments’ Guiding Principles.
