Position Summary

This position is responsible for managing Learning Centre operations at two campus Learning Centre locations. This position provides leadership and development of both virtual and in-person services such as subject tutoring, academic coaching, workshops and learning resources. The Coordinator is primarily responsible for the provision and coordination of various forms of professional learning support services and academic learning strategies, study skills and individual student assessments.This position is required to work primarily on site with some time at both campuses to ensure in-person learning strategist services and staff are supported.This position is responsible for the leadership, coordination and direction of services and projects within the Learning Centre including professional tutoring, learning assistance, and academic coaching that leads to student academic success; for establishing liaison between the Learning Centre and other College departments and programs, as well as external organizations, institutions and bodies. In addition they are responsible for participating on college and provincial committees.This position reports to the Associate Vice President-Academic Innovation.This position is a faculty position and is therefore covered by the Collective Agreement between the College and the Vancouver Community College Faculty Association.The position shall be evaluated during the incumbent’s probationary year and the incumbent shall have a Performance Appraisal conducted thereafter in accordance with procedures set under the Collective Agreement.In order that the administration of the department will be covered during the year, the position will ensure that someone will act in their capacity during any absence.The specific responsibilities listed below are not intended to be a complete and definitive listing. The incumbent is expected to use their discretion and initiative to deal with situations as they arise and to assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Additionally, some of the duties may be delegated to individuals within the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

A.ACADEMICCOACHINGANDLEARNINGCENTREMANAGEMENT

  • Be responsible for and ensures the department maintains an appropriate quality of service.

  • Assumes responsibility for the supervision of all department members during all shifts and locations.

  • Assists and coaches students to understand their learning needs, challenges, and develops individualized plans for students.

  • Develops and provides instruction in learning skills strategies and in areas including, but not limited to, academic skills and effective studying and learning; individually and in groups, centring universal design for learning and active learning in teaching practice.

  • Identifies and assists in developing new workshops or services with department, such as technology help workshops.

  • Acts as Institutional WriteAway coordinator.

  • Promotes and encourages an inclusive and supportive environment with attention to marginalized and at-risk student groups, and ongoing training for staff.

  • Anticipates changes in staff and faculty complement and advises the Associate Vice President.

  • Provides auxiliary staffing if, and when, necessary for coordinator duties.

  • Serves on recommendation and hiring committees which assists the appointment of faculty and support staff.

  • Establishes department duty and vacation schedules and manages absences and auxiliary staffing.

  • Participates in meetings, including Leader’s Forum and other relevant institutional meetings.

  • Actively participates in the Learning Specialists Association of Canada to support professional development, practice, and cross-institutional networking and collaboration.

B.FACULTY,STAFFANDSTUDENTRELATIONS

  • Maintains liaison with other Coordinators II to discuss and interpret points of view, problems and practices.

  • Convenes department meetings on a regular basis and participates in the Library/Learning Centre management group.

  • Keeps members of the department informed about College developments.

  • Establishes committees and delegates duties and responsibilities to committees within the department as necessary.

  • Advises students of available resources (Counselling, Admissions, Student Loans, etc.) and acts in liaison with them.

  • Coordinates and equitably delegates appropriate administrative duties and responsibilities.

  • Assists in resolving internal department conflicts and handling student complaints.

  • Calls on the resources of the College, if necessary, to guide and assist new members with skills.

  • Orients new instructors and support staff to the department.

C.PLANNINGAND****DEVELOPMENT

  • Plans and leads department initiatives in alignment with the College’s strategic plan, academic pan and any other planning documents.

  • Plans and develops services in accordance with professional standards. Provides leadership for service innovation.

  • Collects and assesses data on use of services and impact of services to monitor service effectiveness, and to inform planning and development.

  • Maintains liaison with education institutions, government and other relevant bodies, and keeps current on emerging post-secondary learning strategist and tutoring support developments.

  • Assists in staff and faculty professional development.

  • Assists in the provision and maintenance of adequate facilities and equipment, and works with leadership in the Library to provide and maintain shared facilities and equipment.

  • Advises and assists in department budgeting and planning.

  • Guides the development of Learning Centre workshops, programming, online modules, and marketing each term for students and faculty.

  • Participates in ongoing service review.

**D.**ADMINISTRATION

  • Recommends any desired changes in service models or academic support offerings to the Associate Vice President.

  • Prepares, submits, and monitors the department’s budget.

  • Authorizes expenditure of budgeted funding by signing requisitions.

  • Oversees administration of tutoring appointment system and delegates duties as appropriate.

  • Oversees or conducts training for all new staff in the department, including ongoing or regular training for the entire department.

  • Evaluates term and probationary faculty and support staff. Oversees the Performance Appraisal of faculty/support staff as required.

  • If requested, carry out the other duties and responsibilities.

Area Hiring Criteria

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Master’s degree in a discipline directly related to Vancouver Community College students’ academic support needs e.g. English, EAL, math, sciences, commerce/business, health sciences, adult education.
  • 3 years relevant experience, such as supporting programs that increase the success of EAL, Indigenous and at-risk learners, teaching and supporting post-secondary students from diverse backgrounds, and/or creation and delivery of interdisciplinary learning skills content.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and respond to diverse students, issues and needs, across social identities, levels of ability, and physical and mental health.

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and intercultural skills.

  • Sound knowledge of teaching techniques and experience in their application with post-secondary students, including workshop design, delivery and evaluation.

  • Leadership skills in managing cross-disciplinary, multi-location teams.

  • Excellent organization, analytical and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.

  • Ability to manage change effectively in a rapidly changing, diverse and dynamic collegial team environment.

  • High level of computer literacy including MS Office Suite, Teams, learning management systems and collaborative web conferencing tools.

  • Experience working in a post-secondary level tutoring or other academic support centre is an asset.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE

$53.45 - $85.65/hour. Staring salary will be determined by education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the VCCFA Collective Agreement.
