Job Details

The Environmental Data Curator (EDC) will participate in multiple projects ongoing at the Centre for Earth Observation Science at the University of Manitoba. Projects they may participate in include research being conducted in freshwater such as:

  • community-based research projects on prairie lakes and associated landscapes in Manitoba (Manitoba Great Lakes [MBGL] Project).

  • Poplar River community-based monitoring program, including data collection and analysis.

Qualifications:

ISSIP REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Metis).

  • Must be registered at the University of Manitoba as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in both terms (Fall 2025 and Winter 2026). Students must have a minimum 60% course load (at least 9 credit hours per term for undergraduate students).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office software – MS Word and MS Excel or equivalent software packages.

  • Experience using versioning software such as GitLab.

  • Experience working with water quality datasets.

  • Experience using laboratory management software.

  • Experience collecting water quality data.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Willingness to work in a remote setting without running water or electricity.
  • Willingness to work weekends/evenings while in the field.
  • Experience working on Lake Winnipeg is an asset.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Work with communities to collect water quality data in their areas of interest. Work with our partners like Fort Whyte and the Lake Winnipeg Foundation on inter-lab calibration for specific variables.
  • Work with the Law Faculty on research into current data sharing agreements with Indigenous communities and existing data sharing guidelines.
  • Work with Indigenous project coordinator updating creation of descriptions for common science terms such as eutrophication, nitrogen phosphorus.
  • Curate various Lake Winnipeg Basin datasets.
  • Creation of knowledge mobilization products – combining multiple datasets together.
