The Contract COIMS Advisor supports the effective implementation, governance, and continuous improvement of the Cenovus Operational Integrity Management System (COIMS). Working across corporate and entity levels, the Advisor ensures the management system remains accurate, consistent, functional, and aligned with both regulatory and internal standards. This role strengthens organizational capability through coaching, competency development, and direct entity engagement, supporting conformance, readiness, and high-quality execution.

Responsibilities:

Management System Maintenance & Improvement

  • Evaluate the interconnectedness of COIMS elements and H&S programs to ensure accuracy, consistency, and usability across the organization.

  • Lead and facilitate the development, review, and updates of COIMS standards, H&S competency program materials, and supporting documentation.

  • Identify variability in how COIMS and H&S processes are applied across entities and recommend improvements for standardization and effectiveness.

  • Maintain and refine LOD1 self‑assessment tools and ensure alignment with COIMS and H&S program expectations.

  • Ensure completeness and quality of COIMS documentation, H&S competency materials, and supporting tools (training, templates, guidance documents).

  • Define and communicate clear ownership and accountability for COIMS and H&S program components at both corporate and entity levels.

  • Apply project management methods to lead or support COIMS improvements, H&S competency programs, and other H&S program projects.

  • Monitor internal and external best practices in COIMS and H&S programs and share relevant insights with stakeholders.

  • Support Assurance teams through preparation, scoping, insights, and readiness related to both COIMS and H&S program areas.

Entity & Operational Support

  • Conduct assessments (go-and-see, deep dives, conformance checks) to evaluate entity processes, identify gaps, and uncover improvement opportunities.

  • Analyze entity self‑assurance and performance data to identify trends, disruptions, and systemic improvement needs.

  • Support entities in developing effective corrective actions and enable timely closure of findings.

  • Build COIMS competency within entity teams through coaching, targeted development, and practical guidance.

  • Provide leadership engagement and coaching to help leaders and deployed teams understand their roles, responsibilities, and influence within COIMS.

  • Support Assurance teams with preparation, scoping, insight sharing, and readiness for internal and external assurance activities.

Deliverables:

Management System Deliverables

  • Produce updated COIMS standards, procedures, and supporting documents aligned to current requirements and feedback from entities.

  • Create, update, and publish H&S competency program materials, including training modules, competency tools, and learning aids.

  • Deliver documentation, tools, and training materials for additional Health & Safety program projects, ensuring alignment with COIMS principles.

  • Develop and maintain LOD1 self‑assessment tools, ensuring they accurately reflect COIMS and H&S expectations and drive consistent self-assurance.

  • Generate improvement recommendations and system enhancement proposals based on assessment results, trend analysis, and stakeholder input.

  • Produce project plans, progress updates, and final close‑out reports for COIMS improvements, the H&S competency program, and other H&S projects.

  • Compile insights reports and best‑practice summaries highlighting internal/external trends and their implications for COIMS and H&S programs.

  • Deliver readiness packages for Assurance, including scoping insights, documentation bundles, and evidence collections related to COIMS and H&S program areas.

Entity Support Deliverables

  • Complete entity assessments (go/see, deep dives, conformance checks) and produce clear, actionable reports with prioritized recommendations.

  • Analyze and summarize entity self‑verification data, providing trend analysis and highlighting risks, gaps, and systemic issues.

  • Support entities to develop and track corrective action plans, ensuring actions address findings effectively and are completed on time.

  • Deliver competency‑building workshops, coaching sessions, and/or targeted training for entity personnel on COIMS expectations and system use.

  • Create leadership engagement summaries capturing coaching outcomes, barriers, and progress toward entity‑level COIMS maturity.

  • Prepare readiness packages for entity and Assurance teams, including scoping documents, pre‑reads, and evidence collections.

Assurance & Continuous Improvement Deliverables

  • Produce assurance preparation packages, including insights and documentation required for internal assurance events.

  • Create follow-up reports that highlight systemic learnings from assurance results and recommend enterprise level improvements.

  • Generate continuous improvement recommendations, linking COIMS performance, risk trends, and feedback from entities.

  • Share best practice bulletins or briefing notes to communicate emerging trends, external benchmarks, and lessons learned.

  • Document project outcomes and closure reports for COIMS improvement initiatives.

Technical & Functional Competencies

  • Deep Management System Knowledge: Understanding of management system architecture, interdependencies, and application in operational contexts.

  • Process & Systems Thinking: Ability to evaluate how processes interact, identify variability, and recognize upstream/downstream impacts.

  • Assurance & Conformance Expertise: Skilled in assessments, gap analysis, conformance tools, and corrective action development.

  • Project Management: Proficient in planning, organizing, and driving system or program improvements.

  • Data Interpretation & Insights: Ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify patterns and improvement needs.

  • Technical Writing & Documentation: Ability to create clear, concise standards, procedures, and supporting tools.

Qualifications:

  • Experience directly applicable to the position

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

The following will be considered an asset:

  • Previous auditor experience or formal auditor training
  • Alternate combinations of formal HSE/Audit education combined with extensive field experience will be considered.
