The Ahousaht Education Authority (AEA) serves approximately 250 students and employs over 85 dedicated staff at our primary and high schools. Located in the remote but beautiful village of Ahousaht on the west coast of Vancouver Island, AEA is committed to providing a culturally relevant and safe educational environment for all learners.
Position****Summary
The Maintenance Manager will lead and oversee all facilities and grounds maintenance across AEA's two schools, staff housing units, and related buildings. This includes managing daily operations, scheduling repairs, ensuring health and safety compliance, and supervising maintenance staff and contractors. The role requires a hands-on leader with excellent problem- olving skills and a strong understanding of building systems in a coastal, remote environment.
Key****Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a preventative maintenance plan for all AEA buildings and systems (e.g., plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fire safety).
- Conduct regular inspections to identify repair and safety issues and respond promptly.
- Supervise and schedule custodians, groundskeepers, and tradespeople (including outside contractors).
- Manage maintenance budgets, track inventory, and order necessary supplies.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and compliance inspections.
- Liaise with the Director of Education and school administrators to ensure facility needs are met.
- Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC, fire code, and other regulatory requirements.
- Provide on-call support for urgent maintenance issues.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in building maintenance, facilities management, or a related field.
- Experience supervising staff (up to 10) and managing budgets.
- Certification in a relevant trade (e.g., mechanic, plumbing, carpentry, millwright) is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of BC Building Codes and WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License (required).
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Assets
- Experience working in an Indigenous community, educational and remote setting.
- Knowledge of Ahousaht culture and language.
- WHMIS, First Aid, and/or other safety certifications.
