Job Description:

Reporting to the Food Service Supervisor, the Dietary Helper General helps maintain a clean and efficient food service environment. Key duties include ware washing (cleaning dishes, pots, pans, and utensils), operating and maintaining the dish machine and dishwashing area, sanitizing equipment and workspaces, and supporting overall kitchen cleanliness. The successful candidate will follow a set work routine, safety, infection control, and public health standards to support high-quality patient care.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • High school diploma – Required
  • Food Handler’s Certificate – Asset
  • One year of food service experience in a healthcare or similar setting is an asset
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Physically able to perform all duties, including lifting, pushing, and carrying
  • Consistent with SHN’s values, Code of Conduct, and commitment to safety, inclusivity, and ethical conduct
  • Demonstrates excellent work performance and attendance record

Shift and Schedule

  • Days, afternoons, and evenings
  • Must be available to work all rotating shifts, including statutory holidays and weekends as needed – subject to the Collective Agreement

Job Responsibilities

The Dietary Helper General will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Operate dishwashing machine and ensure proper cleaning of dishes, trays, carts, utensils, etc.
  • Set up and maintain Dishroom and work areas throughout the shift
  • Perform daily and weekly cleaning tasks (e.g., carts, sinks, equipment, etc.)
  • Refill dish machine and soaking sinks as needed
  • Record dish machine temperatures and report any issues
  • Handle waste and recycling safely; reline bins and maintain cleanliness
  • Follow infection control, food safety (HACCP), and workplace safety standards
  • Wear appropriate PPE, maintain personal hygiene, appearance, and uniform to department policy
  • Support the tray line by providing clean items as required
  • Follow department routines and complete other duties as assigned
  • Engage respectfully with staff, patients, and visitors

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to perform repetitive movements, including bending, twisting, reaching, and turning at various heights
  • Requires the ability to push, pull, grip, and grasp without restrictions
  • Must be able to work in a hot, humid environment, stand and walk for extended periods throughout shift
  • Able to push and pull carts/trolleys up to 20 lbs or more
  • Be capable to lift 40 lbs or more from floor to waist and 10 lbs from waist to shoulder
