About the role

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and is based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP).

The successful candidate will be offered a tenure-track appointment with the rank of Assistant Professor (depending on current rank), which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta), is accepting applications for the position of an academic cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgeon.

The Neurosurgery Division at the University of Alberta is committed to the improvement of health through excellence in patient care, leadership in education and research, and in preventative initiatives directed at the promotion of neurological well-being. The Division of Neurosurgery provides comprehensive neurosurgical services for a wide geographic area serving a population of well over two million people. Within the division, every neurosurgical subspecialty is represented with growing volumes across the disciplines. The University of Alberta Hospital is a state-of-the-art neurosurgical center with 2-3 neurosurgical operating rooms daily, an integrated pediatric hospital and operating room, intraoperative MRI, neurosurgery led gamma knife facility and a soon to open brain center housing an advanced neurologic intensive care and observation unit. In addition, the hospital is the comprehensive stroke center for the northern half of the province, with two dedicated biplane angiography suites and a centralized stroke program. Our spine and peripheral nerve programs are active at additional surgical sites in the Capital region, including the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Leduc hospital and at chartered surgical facilities.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of the world’s top academic health science centres. The Division is recruiting an academic cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgeon at to start in July 2026 (start date flexible). The position involves a 65% commitment to clinical practice which includes participation in a general neurosurgery on call program as well as non-classroom teaching (20%). The position also entails a teaching classroom commitment of 10%, a 20% commitment to research and a 5% commitment to administration.

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, with completed training in Neurosurgery, and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful candidate must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Neurosurgery, with advanced experience in open cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery. A Master’s Degree with a recognized fellowship in cerebrovascular neurosurgery is considered an asset. Research background and proposed scope of investigation will be considered.

Individuals having an active affiliation with a Named Research Organization are ineligible to participate in government-funded research projects in Sensitive Technology Research Areas in Canada.
