Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
Environmental Services Worker is responsible for the overall cleanliness and upkeep of Edmonton Centre of Hope buildings and/or grounds, ensuring that services are delivered in a manner that meets or exceeds Health & Safety Standards, funder/contract expectations, demonstrates respect for all individuals, achieves the goal of providing a home-like environment and evidences Christian values.
Environmental Services Worker is supervised by the Environmental Services Manager and should expect to receive direction specific to task and program environmental needs from management at the site where the Worker is delivering services
Accountabilities General Cleaning
- Cleaning will involve any and all activities required to ensure Edmonton Centre of Hope buildings and surrounding grounds are sanitized, clear of debris, and maintained in a condition that ensures a pleasant, positive environment for clients, staff, and visitors. This will involve, but is not limited to: sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning all washroom fixtures, cleaning walls, doors, floors, ceilings, windows, light fixtures, storage areas and bins, changing linens and processing dirty linens, stocking
linen and supply areas, removal of garbage and processing recycling.
- Ensures a high level of cleanliness and sanitary standards are achieved and maintained in all areas of Edmonton Centre of Hope facilities including, but not limited to:
Cleaning of residents’ rooms, common areas, staff room, chapel, dining areas, computer room, offices, reception, meeting rooms, public washrooms and exterior grounds areas
Spot wash accessible walls, clean blinds, windows, doors, furnishings, strip and wax floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets as required.
Clean residents’ rooms, change linen and bedding, clean common washrooms and toilets
Clean residents’ rooms, pods and dormitories upon check out of residents and prepare room for new resident as per requirements by Manager.
Clean, move and arrange furniture as required
- Ensures the general upkeep of external property such a, cleaning the main floor outside windows, picking up litter, emptying outside garbage bins, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering and pruning shrubs and raking when scheduled to carry out these duties.
- Report any damage or deficiencies of property or furnishings to the Environmental Services Manager.
Infection, Prevention & Control
- Ensure that a “universal precautions” approach is used when carrying out duties by using cleaning supplies that are appropriate and specific to the task at hand, wearing disposable gloves, masks, and coveralls as required, disposing of bio-hazards in the appropriate and approved manner, and ensuring that proper hand washing techniques are used at all times.
- Carry out infestation control procedures, ensuring that established procedures are followed, including the use of protective clothing and materials
- Ensure proper handling and maintenance of cleaning equipment and notify Central Services Manager when repairs and/or replacement of equipment is needed.
Inventory Check and Stock Supplies
- Restock washroom supplies, receive and distribute supplies as required.
- Ensure proper storage, labeling and care of cleaning equipment and supplies.
Laundry
- Ensure that all bedding, rags, mop heads, Environmental, Maintenance, and Food Services uniforms are cleaned on a regular basis.
- Perform regular inventory and labeling of all linen supplies
- Ensure that all clean & dried linens are bagged & stored so linens will not gather dust become contaminated and are protected from infestations.
- Complete minor sewing/tailoring duties as needed
- Maintain an orderly and clean laundry area
Other Duties
- Represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner at all times and uphold the Mission of The Salvation Army.
- All other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, moderate amount of lifting, carrying supplies, and walking.
- Working environment is generally in the residential building in fast-paced conditions.
- The job requires lifting/twisting/bending. The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.

Education And Experience Qualifications Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- High School graduate required
- Basic housekeeping course and WHMIS certification
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- 3 months to 1 year prior related experience
- General familiarity with cleaning procedures in an organizational setting
- Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment
- Knowledge of infection, prevention and control procedures
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values
Skills And Capabilities
- Should have good communication skills – both verbal and written
- Be able to work well in team setting.
- Must be able to demonstrate work methods to new employees when required
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Reliability and punctuality are essential
All Environmental Services Workers are required to wear close-toed non-skid shoes. These shoes are a personal expense and must be worn at all times.
The Incumbent’s Work Environment Is Typically In The Entire Facility And Surrounding Property As Designated And May Require Working Under The Following Disagreeable Conditions
- Dealing with angry and abusive people
- Verbal abuse
- Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste
- Exposure to drugs, alcohol and solvents
- The incumbent will work on call 24/7 or as scheduled
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Sharp objects (i.e. needle sticks, knives and weapons)
- Other dangerous situations
- Universal precautions
- Immunization for Hepatitis B
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis
This is a casual position with no fixed working schedule. We have 2 openings.
Target hiring range for this position is $19.25 per hour at Step 1 to maximum of $20.70 per hour at Step 4.
Compensation Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
