Open Door Group (ODG), a mission driven non-profit organization serving communities across Alberta and BC, is looking for a Peer Support Worker to join our team!

 

Wage: $25.79 to $27.51 per hour

Status: Part-Time, Permanent

Hours of Work: 20 hours per week

Schedule: This position requires flexibility in scheduling. Work hours may include occasional evenings based on participant needs.

Location: The primary work location is Open Door Group Edmonton Employment Centre, Suite 500, 10150 - 100 Street NW, Edmonton. This role requires regular travel within Edmonton to deliver services in social housing communities and other community-based locations as part of a mobile outreach model. A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are assets.

Anticipated Number of positions: 2

The BRIDGE Program is a community-based employment initiative that supports individuals experiencing complex and intersecting barriers to workforce entry or reentry. The program operates through a mobile outreach model embedded in social housing communities, alongside services delivered at Open Door Group’s Edmonton Employment Centre.

BRIDGE does not expect individuals to navigate fragmented systems alone. The program meets people where they are, both geographically and personally. Support is accessible, relationship-based, and grounded in trust and respect.

The Peer Support Worker plays a vital role in advancing the goals of the BRIDGE Program. This role provides practical, emotional, and social support to participants navigating complex barriers. Working collaboratively with Case Managers, the Peer Support Worker uses lived or living experience intentionally and ethically to build trust, strengthen engagement, and support participants in achieving individualized goals related to life stability and employment readiness.

Education and Certification

• Peer Support Worker Certification
• CPR and First Aid certification
• Naloxone training
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
• ASIST Suicide Intervention certification, or willingness to obtain
• Mental Health First Aid, or willingness to
• Non Violent Crisis Intervention training, or willingness to obtain

 

Experience

• Minimum one year of recent, related experience supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use, housing instability, or other complex barriers
• Demonstrated lived or living experience with mental health recovery, substance use recovery, homelessness, or housing transitions
• Ability to use lived experience intentionally, appropriately, and within professional boundaries in a peer role
• Experience facilitating groups or workshops
• Experience applying trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approaches in community-based settings

 

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of harm reduction, psychosocial rehabilitation, and trauma informed practice principles
• Knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental health, and substance use
• Understanding of Disability, Equity, and Inclusion principles, the human rights code, and relevant legislation
• Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and service systems
• Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to respond effectively and safely during crisis or high pressure situations
• Ability to build trusting, respectful relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and complex needs
• Ability to observe, assess, and respond appropriately to changes in participant presentation
• Demonstrated group facilitation skills and ability to deliver clear, accessible information
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems, or ability to learn new systems quickly
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
• Ability to work independently in outreach settings and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
• Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable personal vehicle is an asset

 

 

Work Environment and Schedule Requirements

• Work is conducted in community-based settings, including social housing sites, as well as at Open Door Group’s Edmonton Employment Centre
• This role involves both independent outreach work and collaboration within a team environment
• Schedule flexibility may be required to accommodate participant needs
