About the role

POSITION SUMMARY

The Group Director, Audit and Risk Management Services (ARMS) is responsible for the leadership and delivery of high quality, professional, cost effective, value-added and risk-based internal audit and risk management services to all companies under the NFI corporate umbrella.

The ARMS’ Internal Audit team performs risk-based assessments of programs, processes and internal controls, including corporate governance, finance and accounting processes, operational functions and information technology.   This role establishes audit priorities and annual plans, and provides guidance and oversight to ARMS team members who plan and execute individual audits and assignments.   The ARMS’ Internal Audit team also supports Finance teams by performing testing of controls within the Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR) program in support of the Canadian Securities Regulators’ National Instrument 52-109.

The ARMS’ Enterprise Risk Management function provides added value by working with external risk planning and rating agencies and NFI leadership at all levels to identify and measure risks, communicate risks and educate team members on risk.

These functions together provide Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors with information to discharge their responsibilities for overseeing the management of risk.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Develop and execute a risk-based internal audit plan, and regularly review plans and progress at the Audit Committee.
  • Provide oversight to the planning, execution and completion of individual audits, including financial, operational and IT audits, and including ICFR control testing, whether carried out by ARMS team members or by co-sourcing partners.
  • Establish and execute the Enterprise Risk Management program under the oversight of the Enterprise Risk Management Committee.
  • Establish credibility and build professional relationships with Executive Leadership, Audit Committee and Board, as well as with support functions and the external auditors.
  • Represent ARMS in business unit committees and councils developing new business opportunities, processes and/or systems, modifying current business processes, and/or implementing process or system enhancements.
  • Manage ARMS resources, both internal and external, efficiently and effectively.  Prioritize projects and resources to meet the audit plan commitments while maintaining flexibility in audit schedules to meet changing priorities.
  • Recruit high-caliber ARMS staff and provide appropriate opportunities for development and training.
  • Drive continuous improvement in quality and cost effectiveness of services provided.
  • Exercise and demonstrate sound professional judgment.
  • Keep current with new audit techniques, company policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, and knowledge of risk management issues in the industry.

Requirements

  • Hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent, preferably in a business discipline along with an accounting designation such as CPA (or equivalent).
  • Bring 8+ years of directly relevant experience in an audit function or in a related financial, business, or corporate role.
  • Maintain strong, up‑to‑date knowledge of risk management, internal controls, internal audit standards, and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrate confident presentation and facilitation skills, along with strong interpersonal and leadership abilities. Be capable of mentoring and guiding the ARMS team as they take on increasingly complex responsibilities.
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels of the organization.
  • Possess strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess risk issues and challenge the status quo.
  • Additional audit or risk-related designations such as CIA, CRMA, CRM, CISA, etc. are considered an asset.
  • Be able to travel up to 15%, primarily within the US and UK. A valid passport (and visa, if required), or the ability to obtain one, is essential.
